It's no secret that 64-bit computing is becoming more and more mainstream, and OEM's and system builders are increasing the capabilities of their products by including more system memory (RAM), faster processors, and larger hard drives. Most 64-bit processors on the market today (like the AMD AthlonTM 64 series and the Intel CoreTM 2 products) can run 32-bit code blazingly fast, and as such, you will find that most system builders are still shipping 32-bit Windows operating systems by default.

The author of the article correctly listed "drivers availability" as one of the things to check in order to install Vista 64; unfortunately, at least in my personal exprience, drivers, and firmware too, are the biggest issue people would encounter with the 64 bit version of the OS.
As far as I know there are virtually no specific utilities and drivers working in a 64bit environment for my Toshiba Tablet M400 and a lot of this software is essential to use the laptop. HP has no Vista 64 firmware for the All in One Laserjet 2840; yes you can install the printer drivers but faxing and scanning capabilities are not available.
What I would like to see is a more accurate certification of what is "OSxxx capable", OSxxx Ready", "OSxxx Premium" etc; specify if printer xiz is 32 and/or 64 capable, ready etc.
This would help people and increase MS popularity among users.

I had a blank second partition, so i installed Vista X64. My only reason was I wanted to upgrade to 4GB or more of RAM.
I ran into a show-stopper. VPN Client. CheckPoint SecureClient is not available in an x64 version, and there is none in site.
It's not Microsoft that is killing x64 adoption, it's the software developers. Until they embrace x64 it will remain a curiosity for Geeks.
And THAT is a shame.

I must be one of the exceptions. I presently dual boot Vista Ultimate 32-bit and Vista Business 64-bit, and have had a great experience. I've had no driver issues, no software issues, and everything just works regardless of which OS I boot. I'm not quite ready to fully commit to 64-bit yet, more due to the horror stories I hear from others, plus it annoys me that I still have to use the 32-bit IE because so many plug-ins aren't available for 64-bit browsers yet. Once again, it's the developers, not Microsoft that is largely to blame for the slow adoption of 64-bit computing.

Kids, its time for us to "demand" that Microsoft Release Vista R2 as 64-bit only. No 32-bit versions for PCs. In a couple of years new PCs might have 8-GB of RAM as standard equipment. The added RAM would, of course, be useless if the OS is still 32-bit, unless we all run VMWare 64 bit and relegate 32-bit Windows to being a virtual appliance.

That's what they've done in the Server space. Exchange 2007 is already 64-bit only, and Server 2008 will be the last 32-bit Server OS. Unfortunately, I beleive they've already committed to a 32-bit version of the next Desktop Windows, IIRC.

#5: Thanks for the "Kid", being fifty is surey welcome.
Seriously speaking while I agree with you about the need drop the 32bit environment I am pretty sure that MS will not follow.
You are correct about the next release of Windows desktop: several senior managers already stated that Windows 7 will be both 32 and 64, Office is still 32bit only, a pletora of MS software is, not only 32 bit but in some cases as, if I remember correctly the latest release of Great Plans, V10 does not even work on Vista 64.
Why they will not drop it? The usual MS problem: mantaining backward compatibility.

Well stated. Even Apple has released all their PC's/Notebooks with Tiger/Leopard, all 64 bit. If Microsoft made the bold move and forced 64 bit on the new PC's, that would be a step in the right direction.
