Since Microsoft has abandoned my plan of abandoning Vista, I feel compelled to help the company out in any way I can. And while I still believe abandoning Vista is the only true option of fixing Windows, I can appreciate the fact that Microsoft has dumped a huge sum of cash into the OS and it's loath to lose out.
Of course, with reports suggesting Vista will become a target for hackers in 2008 and now, even Microsoft executives have no idea what "Vista Capable" really means, I can't help but think this operating system is tanking faster than Microsoft Bob.

#1: So you're refuting that Vista will be a target for hackers in 2008 are you? That seems to be an incredibly naive statement. However, you may be right. If Vista's market share stays as small as it is now, hackers won't bother with it because nobody's running it.

#3: Linux would be doing better on the desktop if not for several factors working against it such as Microsoft unethical practices, e.g. the bribing of a company to scuttle a completed Linux deal.

Latch, Linux for the desktop has come a long way since I first started using it on a daily basis.. I think the first time I saw and started messing with Linux was around '96-'97, then tried it again around '99..
I think as the cost of Windows keeps going up, people may start wanting to look to Linux as an alternative; as long as the FUD doesn't kill their desire to change.. I know I'm really looking for program alternatives for Linux that I use on Windows.. Having a family now, I don't have the $300 to get a new OS nor a new computer to make it usable when installing Linux works faster and better than windows ever did on the same machine..

#5: There are a lot of equivalent programs for Linux that replace common Windows apps, but there always seems to be one or two that you can't find. Personally, I can't get a Linux VPN client for our SonicWall and don't have a lot of experience with IPSEC to configure OpenSwan to get it working. However, none of that is as much of a problem as the data formats and the proprietary lock-in they can provide. MS knows this which is one reason why they are fighting so hard to scuttle ODF and make OOXML an ISO standard, even if they have to completely subvert the process and buy off countries to push it through. And here we are back again with MS' unethical business practices. It just blow my mind how the various microbots here on AW can completely ignore MS' underhanded moves & dirty tricks -- even blatantly illegal ones like the whole Nigerian Mandriva deal.

Is there an alternative for Outlook? If not there is no way that Linux could even begin to be a serious threat for MS.

#7: While I don't use it personally, supposedly Evolution can connect to Exchange servers but it doesn't have all the functionality of Outlook. If I remember right, the Calendar functions either aren't there or are weak.

#2 all i'm saying is, this guy hates vista and will say just about whatever he can to scare people from using it.... You know, like the large population of gullible idiots who take one man's "Blogged" opinion as if it were the word of God.

With over 200 million computers sold worldwide and nearly all having Windows Vista installed, it is beyond ridiculous to say that Windows Vista is tanking faster than Microsoft Bob.
The author states that Microsoft should be worried about Apple not Google is equally ridiculous. Apple's computer market share, even with its recent surge, is laughably small.
The author simply doesn't know what he is talking about. That he is writing for a reputable tech web site is incredible.
