Five secrets to faster Vista starts | |

Oh, great. Here we go again. The wise old men of mainstream tech journalism are once again repeating the conventional wisdom that Vista is slow to start up and slow to shut down. They’re wrong. I proved this to my satisfaction last spring (see also the first and second parts in the series) with tests on three separate systems, and I’ve just repeated the tests on a new crop of Vista PCs to verify that there’s no new problem. The results are the same or better, perhaps reflecting incremental improvements from the many reliability and performance updates since then. In this post, I’ll explain why they’re wrong and show you how you can fix the problem if you encounter a slow startup. | ||

| Perhaps when Windows machines utilize EFI in place of the slow BIOS we can cut a few seconds off the boot time. I turned off all fades on a Toshiba A135-7404 with 2-GB of DDR2-667 and a single core 1.76-GHz Celeron M (quite a snappy CPU, essentially being a rebranded Pentium M at 533-bus speed), the boot time is two minutes, the same as my 2-GHz dual core MSI notebook. Standby works great. Close the lid and then open it when I need to use the machine. Takes about 3 or 4 seconds to come back to liffe. How come such features are never mentioned when discussing boot times? One does not need to fully turn off a Windows machine to save energy. Use the machine, then put it in standy. Easy and quick. |

| What to do if there is a 10-15 second delay before the booting progress bar appears? I've installed all updates, removed junk software and my hardware is not old, drivers are latest, it was working fast when installed but as I installed my apps, it slowed down. The delay is between the boot loader screen with what OS to load appears and before it actually starts to boot by showing the black screen with the green progress bar. I've even defragged all partitions. Clearly, people are not whining just for its sake, obviously some are getting mixed results. |

tux,
I ran into the same problem. I'm thinking an update might have caused the issue. I also have a delay between the BIOS handing off to the boot loader as well as between the initial phase of Windows bootup and the 2nd phase. |
