Businesses will dodge Vista in 2008 | |

Vista uptake is unlikely to increase dramatically during 2008, according to security vendor McAfee, who said that businesses are "leery" of upgrading from current Microsoft operating systems. One reason businesses have not been keen to upgrade to Vista is the hardware that is needed to handle the resource-hungry operating system, David Marcus, security research manager for McAfee Avert Labs, told ZDNet Australia sister site ZDNet.co.uk. "In 2007 there has been less than 10 percent market penetration for Vista," said Marcus. "There hasn't been a huge adoption. Most people haven't upgraded because of the hardware upgrade needed." There is not enough of a security case for upgrading to Vista, Marcus added. While the 64-bit version of Vista has more security features than Windows XP, XP running Service Pack 2 with security products was adequate for most businesses needs, he said. | ||

Windows ME was never a corporate OS, and was never sold for use in the enterprise.

#2: I was only stirring the pot. Back in the day my father, who was doing offline video editing, was having the greatest time using Premiere on ME. I could hear his screams of rage from miles away when ME crashed in the middle of an edit. And it did it so often you could set your watch by it.
But in reality, businesses will skip Vista because: 1) XP SP2 is good enough 2) Vista requires re-training 3) Vista requires beefier hardware 4) Vista's legacy app & driver support isn't great I suspect that Vista really will end up as essentially a consumer-only release. 2 years isn't a long time to wait for businesses. Vista is the stepping stone from one paradigm to another, and hopefully MS will learn from the Vista woes and come out with a better release in Windows 7. |

| Seems as though most new OS releases from any company require some retraining, beefier hardware, and are short on legacy app and driver support. |

All these things were said about XP when it came out vs Windows 2000. The only difference is that MS is now offering a shorter time frame to the next Windows version after Vista. If the 2-3 year time frame is true many businesses will start skipping releases not because what you said is valid but just that a new OS rollout every 2-3 years doesn't make any sense. |

I'm teating down my 3 year old Win2K3 Enterprise Server (with the 1.8TB RAID5) and turning it into a Windows Home Server tonight.
Wish me luck :) It took me a while to figure out how to unbind the 6 drives from it's RAID 5 configuration down to separate drives/volumes. I haven't had to touch that server for 3 years and i forgot how to work the RAID Controller card LOL TL |

And I just rememered that machine only has a CD drive. WHS comes on DVD.

#9; I think it's your math that's skewed. The 55% you mentioned that have non-MS clients, do they service non-MS clients exclusively, or do they offer Linux as well as MS solutions? The 45% do not have non-MS clients, so they only offer MS solutions. And of that 45%, 90% of them don't want Vista. I tried to get more details from the article you quoted, but this is what I got when trying the link:

#11: It's certainly a head-scratcher. The executive summary says gangbusters for Vista, but the quotes say nobody's moving for several years. Go figure. And for $775 to read the full report, I'm not that interested.
