Microsoft Vista sells even if it doesn't work | |

Imagine a product that many people do not think works well but sells millions of copies. Well, that's Microsoft's operating system, Windows Vista. According to the FT, both business and personal computer users have tried to stick with older versions of the Microsoft OS, Windows XP, but adoption is still good enough to drive outstanding earnings for the world's largest software company. As the newspaper says: "None of this, however, has had any discernible impact on Microsoft's financial fortunes. Many companies buy their software from Microsoft under an arrangement called Software Assurance, which lets them upgrade to new software whenever they like in return for a fixed annual payment." Perhaps that is what having a monopoly is all about. Even if products are not perfect, they are adopted. Even if companies normally would not make an investment, they are on an "automatic upgrade" program. | ||

| Grumble grumble... darn media... no one is ever forced to do anything... even with SA, you're still not forced to rollout Vista if you don't want to. |

| Okay seriously..... these stories are not "news" stories.... everyone hates vista.... that's not news... Problem with vista is, its less "now" and we're living in a "now" world. No one wants to wait an extra second, no one wants to try a program that's actually coded right for vista, no one wants to THINK when they use a computer. They just want what they want NOW. They want to be able to "download their email", play their stupid games, download their porn, and if they cant get it, or *gasp* have to learn how to do something RIGHT to get it, they run away screaming... Honestly... It's a shame they can't make people take computer courses before allowing them to buy computers. |

| #2 Hate to break it to you... but some people out there think of a computer as a glorified appliance (i know... crazy!). Actually, most often it's not even glorified. So they won't be too keen on taking your computer course. They don't care about the OS, unless it gets in there way of what they really want to do... and Vista gets in their way more so than any previous Microsoft OS... that's partly why they hate it. Other people want to do a lot more with their PC's, and actually will go out of their way to see just how much they can do with them. They don't need your computer course either as they'd rather try it out themselves. So whilst it's nice to try and think of a computer like a car (i.e. you should need to learn about it, pass a test to get your license to drive one)... it's not and never will be. |

| It could be argued that in an IT environment that values simple over complex, a system that requires a course and a test before you can buy it would be seen as a failure. People don't feel they should take a course before using their TV remote or their microwave oven, either. If I had a television that constantly made me verify that I really wanted to watch the channel I selected, and verify my age every time I switch to that channel, the television would be out the window in a heartbeat. |

I have Vista on my first PC, and XP and Ubuntu on my second. [I built both PC’s with dual-core AMD cpu’s]. Over the months I spend most of my time with Vista, the other PC I boot once a month if that.
I agree most don’t need it. I’ve always been the first of my friends to use the latest version of Windows. I tried the Mac OS; there is nothing about it to consider switching. I like building my own system. Over 20 years with Windows, from 3.1 and up, Vista is a success for me. |

| One of the common knocks against Linux was the supposed retraining involved. Now the same pro-Windows types are complaining that users don't want to learn anything new. Funny how learning something new was a negative against Linux but something that everyone should do for Vista. |

| I love vista. For me it's both fast and stable. I have no issues with it at all. |
