Microsoft Has Shelved Its Internet 'Persona' Service | |

Microsoft has quietly shelved a consumer information service that was once planned as the centerpiece of the company's foray into the market for tightly linked Web services. The service, originally code-named Hailstorm and later renamed My Services, was to be the clearest example of the company's ambitious .Net strategy. It was intended to permit an individual to keep an online persona independent of his or her desktop computer, supposedly safely stored as part of a vast data repository where there could be easy access to it from any point on the Internet. At the time of the introduction of My Services, Microsoft also proclaimed that it would have a set of prominent partners in areas like finance and travel for the My Services system. However, according to both industry consultants and Microsoft partners, after nine months of intense effort the company was unable to find any partner willing to commit itself to the program. | ||

Ahh yes, but the very thing that makes Microsoft the genius company it is is the fact that it learns from these failures and remains incredibly tenacious. .NET will be a success one way or another for a whole host of reasons whether it be from an industry acceptance, development, consumer uptake, or marketing standpoint. MS will do just fine as they have with any other failure they've had.
As a side note... you don't see them running to the courts blaming Scott McMoron for Hailstorm's inability to launch do you? :) Take Care All! Andy |

That would be typical Microsoft for you #5 that's for sure. Plenty of their products have been ahead of their time and have unfortunately failed but prospered in years to come.
Now if only they would bring back the Digital Sound System 80... Argh... :) |

Do any of you realize that other companies find out what their customers want first, then build it--they don't have to pull their products. MS builds crap, foists it on you, when you bitch enough, they pull it. Who asked for Clippy, Bob, SmartTags, Hailstorm? Apparently no one.

I'm not saying they are uninnovative, I'm saying this doesn't show good customer service.
What other company has ever pulled a product, and the customers have gone, "Yeah, they serve us great!" If this does happen to another company, the customer feels embarassment and relief and they hope it never happens again. By the sound of softies, each time MS pulls a product it's a sign of some of the finest understanding of what the customer wants--if that was true, how did a product they didn't want get to (or near to) market? That's what I am saying. |

RANT, why do you presume so much? I would include many more people besides soda--you seem to be working your way into a personal vendetta with him yourself.
If you think this is a small thing, and not a great big blunder that's your prerogative. For 2 years, all we've been hearing about is Hailstorm, my Services, etc.. They were the only apparent way that MS was going to offer paid services directly to the home consumer (besides alerts), and it's DEAD. I don't know what repeating the words: "they couldn't get any customers, so they pulled it" demonstrates to you. The fact that they pull products that people don't want demonstrates to me that they don't know what customers want, they don't listen to them--unless it's a violent reaction.
