Reliance Communications Partners With Microsoft to Deliver IPTV in India on the Microsoft Mediaroom Platform | |

Reliance Communications Ltd. and Microsoft Corp. today announced a strategic partnership to deliver a highly connected, personalized TV experience to consumers in India through Reliance’s Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service, which will be powered by the award-winning Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV software platform. The announcement was made by Anil D Ambani, chairman, Reliance Communications, and Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer of Microsoft, at a press event today in Mumbai. Reliance Communications shall have the exclusive deployment right for the platform in India. Reliance’s IPTV service, powered by the Microsoft Mediaroom platform, will allow Reliance to deliver entirely new, connected and personalized TV experiences for Indian consumers, with several advanced features, such as video on demand (VOD), digital video recording (DVR), instant channel changing, and personal media sharing. IPTV subscribers will be able to watch popular standard definition (SD) content as well as high-definition (HD) content — for the first time in India — at the click of a button from the comfort of their homes, and enjoy a connected entertainment experience that will soon allow them to watch their favorite shows on their TV or PC. The service will be launched by fiscal end (March 2008). | ||

I am so amazed at how far behind the rest of the world we are (even smaller, less-developed countries) in Internet Services.
There's no excuse for the majority of the US not having Broadband. There's no excuse for us not having IPTV yet. Theres's NO excuse for us still having to rely on over-priced, $30 a month POTS lines, and that cost is just for local calling! (Verizon). I could list forever... It's all about money and control. We HAVE the technology. Unfortunately, we also have Greedy companies in control of it. They all want exclusivity, control, and the ability to micro-manage everything about it. Foey.... Until this mindset is broken, by law or competition, the US will be stuck in the dark ages of the internet. 10 years or so ago a fellow Mac Consultant used to go to Holland once a year to provide service on a contract he had there. They were ALREADY ahead of us in internet connectivity by a wide margin. While most of the US was working with 33.6kb/s dial-up, nearly every household in Holland had at least 128K ISDN. They used to laugh at him when he told them our connectivity 'status'. TL |

How true you are.. It's just corporate greed and it's killing the little guys..
I remember after I got my MCSE (paid over $5000 for the boot camp), I got a MCP e-magazine and it mentioned how you could get your MCSE for around $1000.. Needless to say, I was interested and clicked on the link.. Yeah, it's $1000 IF YOU WERE IN INDIA and could attend any of their THREE locations.. I guess someone needed MCSE's for their call centers and asked Microsoft to do this.. Plus, it seems like they go after the pirates here in the states.. I condone software piracy, but I was also over seas (Asia) and was amazed by the street vendors, stores, etc. selling MS software or any kind of software for that matter for what resulted in pennies on the dollar.. I guess that's their way of helping third-world countries.. |

| Well, here in India, things are not exactly advanced w.r.t. TV, internet, music, movies etc. Most metros get "high-speed broadband internet" but the actual speed is a paltry 128 kbits/s-256kbit/s, DVDs are beginning to get popular and slowly replacing the earlier Video CD (VCD) standard, we don't have any music store to purchase Indian music from although we can buy iPods, there's no Apple Retail store to buy products from, and people will ask "huh?" if you mention HDTV. Worst of all and most frustrating are the internet speeds, we can barely watch YouTube videos smoothly, there's no use of buying a good quality webcam since upload speeds are (*usually*) half the download speeds, no TV over internet, downloading software takes weeks and Web 2.0 sites all run slow. |
