Microsoft to continue Mac support | |

As a five-year agreement with Apple Computer draws to a close, Microsoft on Wednesday reiterated its support for the Macintosh. "The agreement has ended, but our business is absolutely continuing," said Kevin Browne, head of Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit. However, Browne did not commit to continuing support for a particular time frame. "We'll continue this business as long as the business case makes sense," he said, speaking at Microsoft's Silicon Valley campus here. Browne said Microsoft is focused on developing Office and Internet Explorer for the Mac, but he said the company would consider adding other titles if it does not take up too much of the software maker's resources and if the company can get a decent return for the efforts. | ||

Thanks, Bob, or whoever pulled it. What was the deal with that? (Not that I expect an answer; I'd bet my FUD theory was pretty accurate.)
Yes, after two or three stories hyping the possibility of something interesting from K. Browne, maybe even an announcement about Mac.Net, we get a keynot we he has these exciting things to say: "We'll continue to develop Office, IE, and maybe someday we'll have other apps for the Mac." Woo, don't go out on a limb their Kevin or Microsoft--I would say that after the hype, such a non-event bodes poorly for the future Apple/MS relationship. So do you think MS has nocompetes with K.B. and the rest of the MacBU saying they can't go to Apple if they disband the division? |

| #1, no it wasn't. That other story was some twaddle about WHAT MIGHT be announced. This is the real announcement and guess what was announced: NOTHING! That's the story in this case. |

I wasn't expecting anything, I was just hoping for something of note, something new. Personally, I think if there was a split it would serve Apple better than it would serve MS. And if they had anything solid to say about .Net on the Mac, that would have been good too. Instead we get nothing. Why bother have a keynote if the most interesting thing you say is: someday there may be other MS apps offered on the Mac? This post was edited by sodajerk on Thursday, April 11, 2002 at 13:53. |
