Windows Vista was released to manufacturing a year ago next week, and landed on retail shelves exactly nine months ago today. To mark the occasion, I dragged a system out of mothballs and installed the original RTM version of Vista Ultimate on it. (Well, OK, I also needed a test bed for some upcoming work, but still…) | ||

A question for the intellegencia. Any of you runnin' Vista without a virus scanner. BTW - what does an antivirus program do on Vista anyways? |

Oops--I was going to say, switch to a Standard User rather than an administrator-level account. That makes a huge difference. And of course, employ a firewall.
An AV program on Vista... well, some of that will depend on what AV program/suite you use. From a high level standpoint, though, most work in the same way as they did in XP--they look for viruses, etc. based on signature files and heuristics, and then take action if triggered. |

I have on occasion, but generally I run with AV as an additional layer of security. BTW - what does an antivirus program do on Vista anyways? Scan memory-resident and on-disk applications for viruses/malware/etc. (depending on the capabilities of the scanner) -- the same as on any other OS. Its necessity is (somewhat) proportional to user behavior, but it is good to use one in any case, and keep it updated, for some level of addition defense. It doesn't happen often, but even software/media from trusted sources can carry malicious software. |

#1, Nope. While I have seen nothing come close to Vista - no threat traffic of any kind has made it to the OS and the few vulns. that have been reported would have been mitigated by Protected Mode in IE, or the UIPI brokering traffic between layers and finally UAC, we have still been running AV.
That said, we do wonder why.... BUT I say that with a lot of care - all our mail and net traffic is scrubbed at four layers before it reaches the perimeter of our networks and again at host servers and as I said, clients. So my wondering about it comes from being behind so many layers. I do however wonder how much actual work the AV is going to have to do. I do run as a standard user, but then again, so do all Vista users - even pseudo admin users are standard users that simply do not have to enter user credentials. I run where I do have to enter them. **The Root level admin account, as you know, is disabled by default. |

| I have an antivirus program installed on Vista but it is not running realtime protection. I just use it to scan files that I download on occasion. I did the same thing on XP though and never had a problem. |

I guess I'll install the copy of Kaspersky I've got sitting on my desk, bit I gotta tell ya I'm not really sure I needs it. |

| #7, Oldog - run Haute Secure for IE 7 in Protected Mode on Windows Vista. It is tiny and with it in place and running [provided your email provider scans your email], I'd consider giving AV-Free a serious look. www.hautesecure.com |
