Microsoft Goes to 1GB, Google Ups Gmail to 4GB | |

Microsoft late Thursday announced its Windows Live SkyDrive service was being upgraded to support 1GB of file storage - double what was previously available. Meanwhile, Google on Friday said it would "speed up" the counter increasing storage available to Gmail users, reaching 4GB by the end of the month. Microsoft's SkyDrive will receive a number of other new features as well, including subscribing to a user's public folder via RSS, seeing who uploaded a specific file in your public folder, and more integration with Windows Live Spaces and Messenger. Windows Live SkyDrive is only available in the United States, UK and India for the time being. | ||

how many times will i read this headline...
as dozens of others have written... gmail goes to 4GB, while hotmail already gives 5GB skydrive just went from half GB to 1GB. gdrive doesn't exist. |

| mooresa56 is right, hotmail is already 5 GB at the time when gmail was still with 2.8 GB.. And why do we make so much hype for just 4 GB (which is going to be in future, right now its still 3.1 GB), there are email providers like Yahoo who has highest penetration in entire US who has broken all the barriers of space!! They are already giving umlimited space which I think gmail will never go!! |

| 5gb from hotmail, and unlimited from Yahoo mail is pointless when those web based email apps pretty much suck. Gmail is much better. |

| The only people using Gmail are those that didn't get a good Yahoo mail account name years ago. Why else would you want limited storage space and a fishy privacy policy? |

I have had a Yahoo and Hotmail account for countless years with the name I wanted (and still have them for spam accounts..I have even had the premium versions of both). Why would I want a slower interface, cluttered with big flashy banner ads and flash, and tiers of folders? Why would I want to go through the trouble of creating folders when I can use smart labels in Gmail? And how about the insanely fast mail search within gmail? How about the conversation view that threads your emails in gmail? Why go back to the still slow search response from windows live mail and yahoo? And finally, gmail performance is well above the other in respect to loading. Limited storage? Seems to me that Gmail started the big storage (out of the big 3 clients), while yahoo and hotmail followed, only to one up them. Why not be proactive instead of reactive? Not to mention, Gmail storage continued to grow since the day I signed up.
How about the fact that someone can send me a document or spreadsheet in gmail and I can open it right in gmail docs, and edit it, save it, and resend it, all without having to leave my interface? Why should I have to pay premium prices for pop3 support if I desired it? Gmail has that free of charge too. And why should I burden the people I send emails to with ads on the bottom of my emails? What if they are paying for a premium web client or have a pop3 address? That means they are getting spams at the bottom of my emails. Why should they get the spam? Windows Live, while an improvement over Hotmail, (same goes for Yahoo) just missed the boat this time around. Gmail 2 is already in development and is sure to widen the gap even further with it's offline support. |

All of this space floating out there and my Lotus Notes client still nags me when my inbox is over 100 mb.

| #8: Thunderbird has a plugin (Webmail w/Hotmail extension) that supports Hotmail and Live Hotmail or whatever the hell it's called. I have an ancient Hotmail account that I poll with all my other mail accounts, including Gmail, via Thunderbird. No fuss, no muss. |

| Yup. Other 3rd party clients also have such plug-ins. |
