Noted MS MVP and general technology/.NET blogger, Frans Bouma recently posted about Microsoft's recent decision to open the .NET Base Class Library (BCL) source code for reference-only (so that you can, for example, step into the BCL code in the debugger which is currently impossible). Frans suggests that, if you're a .NET developer, you do NOT look at the code since Microsoft's license does not have a provision for being 'tainted' by looking at the code. Other similar licenses (such as the one Sun uses for Java) have 'taint' provisions to prevent you from suffering legal problems after looking at the code. Follow the link to read more. | ||

This is completely ridiculous.
First, a large percentage of the source for .NET has been available via the ECMA submission for years. Second, it's trivial to use Reflector to access the source of the .NET BCL since it's not obfuscated. This is FUD at its best. |

People keep pressuring Microsoft to release their code. The EU did it. Linux users did it. And now they're doing it, and it's still not right.
Will MS ever catch a break? |

#2, Yes, once it's done without strings attached.
#1, From a legal standpoint, we were actually better off without the source code since Microsoft has effectively created a venus fly trap. If you look at the code, you become tainted and prohibited from the white room. I see just as much good as bad coming from this as it currently stands. |

Don't look at the source code of any open source project.
If you do, your project could then be subject to the GPL. |

Finally... a subject that parkkker has a semi clue about - even if it was meant otherwise!
Always be aware of what source code you are looking at. If you are working on commercial software then you can look at some open source code (e.g. BSD), but not source code that is licensed under a more restrictive license. The same applies to the GPL - stay away from commercial and other restrictive licenses. Of course if you're not a coder then you can look at whatever you like and even call stuff like this FUD because you don't know any better. |

#1: There is a big difference between a specification and the actual code that implements that spec.
#2: MS was directed to open up its server communications protocols for purposes of interoperability, which is not anywhere near the same as the source code to .NET. #5: There is a big difference between looking at GPL code and using GPL code. In most of the world's countries, there is no such beast as software patents. You cannot use GPL code verbatim without passing rights downstream, but you can certainly incorporate methods and ideas. Things are dicier in the US with their silly concept of patenting ideas, which hinders competition and innovation, instead of implementations. |
