What Microsoft doesn't want you to know about Vista SP1 | |

Microsoft touts performance and reliability as the key benefits of Vista's SP1, but a close look at the beta shows a significant change Microsoft doesn't seem to want you to know about --- you can now easily change your default desktop search tool to Google Desktop Search, or any another one. As I point out in my review of the beta of SP1, SP1 makes several interface changes related to search. The Start menu's Search link has been taken away, and if you choose Start --> Default Programs --> Set your default program, you can easily change your default search to any tool you want. As I show in my review, there are several other changes related to search as well. Those changes were not made willingly. Microsoft made them as an extension of the company's 2002 antitrust settlement with government regulators. But in briefings Microsoft gave to the press, PointPoint presentations, and a white paper about SP1, Microsoft made no mention of the change, even though the company presented in exquisite detail many other much more minor changes that SP1 makes. | ||

Yes, MS really didn't want you to know about changes to search -- they only published a KB article, documentation on MSDN, the status report months ago, and this blog post:

#2: Why wasn't that information in the press briefing, the presentation and the white paper? Why should you have to dig through KB articles, developer docs or random blogs? The entire point of the article was that MS was downplaying it by only referring to it in obscure places, and you basically confirmed that by listing the obscure places. He never said the info wasn't there somewhere, just not easy to find.
Some people really should try harder to comprehend before jumping to defend MS. |

Presspass and MSDN are obscure places now? Members of the press have even pulled from Windows Vista and other MS blogs on several occasions, so it hardly counts as obscure either.
Each of those items mentioned in my previous post spurred several articles from C/ZDNet, eWeek, and others including ComputerWorld. The author just hasn't been paying attention, and chose to write a negative article rather than checking to see that it was old news. He didn't even bother to check his employer's publication. He also wrongly frames it as if MS was unwilling to make the changes when, in fact, they willingly made the changes outside of any urging from the court. Google then wanted more, went to the court to try and get it, and IIRC, even pressed for an extension of the settlement, but were denied because they had little standing, were not parties to the original case, and the DOJ was satisfied with the changes MS had already made. But the fact that the above is well publicized didn't stop you or the author from jumping to malign MS. |
