Bowing to pressure from customers and computer makers, Microsoft plans to keep Windows XP around a little longer.
Large PC manufacturers were slated to have to stop selling XP after January 31. However, they have successfully lobbied Microsoft to allow them to continue selling PCs with all flavors of Windows XP preloaded until June 30, a further five months.

I'm not so sure that MS is bowing to pressure to keep XP around. I think they are having a tough time with the SP1 beta and anticipate it to take a bit longer to "perfect". Hence it may take longer to release than expected. I can't even install the five language file. The install starts and then gives a fatal error message. I filed a bug report but can't send the requested log file as there isn't one. That's seems more like an alpha than a beta to me. Anyone else having this problem, or it just me? I'm downloading the slipstreamed .iso Vista, both 32 and 64 bit, to try next.

Note: The ISO will perform a clean install.
Before you try it, try using the all-language standalone package.
I'm not sure, but you may have gotten the error on the 5-language package if you have language packs installed other than the 5 supported by that package (could also by driver related). Check the setup group and post the error there to get info about possible causes.

n4cer: I'll try the all language pack next. Good idea. I'll install the .iso on a different hard drive to see of the hardware drivers are an issue once they're loaded.

Since it and other OS's have reached their EOL, why not release the source code as open-source.. I'd be interested to see what others could/would do with XP..

Winux: that would be sweet, but this would be bad for MS on so many levels.
I suspect the only way MS is going to get traction on Vista is to force vendors not to develop XP drivers for next gen hardware.

Releasing the WinXP Code would be releasing 90% of the Vista Code :)

#4 In that spirit, why doesn't Linux charge 50$ per copy to actually see whether people run it because they are just cheap, or whether its worth running.
I think it would be a great experiment!

I can pretty much guarantee you that 10 years from now, I'll still be working on Windows XP machines...

Select and Open customers have always had the right to downgrade XP Professional to Windows 2000 or Windows 98.
It hardly means XP was a failure.

#10 was too stupid to figure out how to use Windows, so he switched to Mac OS...

Because "security by obscurity" doesn't work that way!
#7, In that spirit, why not force all computer manufacturers to bundle Linux with every computer whether or not the customer wants it? And call it another unit sold! As long as we're charging for Linux, we may as well have a money train always running!
#6, lol... You are probably more right than not!

#7 - I run Linux and Windows dual-boot.. The main reason I got into Linux was:
1: it was free; reading everything on the web and in magazines at the time said this was going to be the next great thing.
2: The company I was working for had a couple servers setup from a prior administrator. Had to jump into it feet first and learn or sink.
3: the networking tools which come STANDARD with a default Linux installation outweight anything out there for Windows. It's there and it just works right out of the box.
