What Microsoft's EU Ruling Means to You | |

This week's European appeals court ruling means Microsoft will be confronted with making fundamental changes to core business practices and technologies, well beyond the European continent. Microsoft customers and partners should prepare now for what lies ahead. The appeals decision puts Microsoft under strict government oversight in Europe. The European Competition Commission can—and almost certainly will—compel Microsoft to reveal much of its secret server sauce, to better interoperability with third-party software. Additionally, the European Commission's position is emboldened for bringing actions against other Microsoft technologies, such as .NET, Office and search. The European Commission wants nothing less than the technological equivalent of breaking up Microsoft. | ||

| MS has repeatedly talked about their newfound love of interoperability, and they already pledged to open up their server communications protocols, so I'm not sure what the problem is. |

this latest ruling will be as "effective" on the market as their forcing an 'n' version on the public.
IOW... a few nuances of the market dynamics will change, but the players (and their market shares) will not change. And so goes the continued realization that government (be it American, Canadien, EU, or UN) is inept in every way. |

| I love how MS' man at the DoJ, Thomas Barnett, came out with a baffling statement on how reigning in MS' anti-competitive behaviour was bad for competition. It's bad from Microsoft's point of view, but it's good for everyone else. |

| latch, dont be so naive. The ruling against msft is ONLY good for the lawyers involved and the politicians that get their pockets lined by both sides. REGARDLESS of the outcome (for msft, or against)... this holds true. |
