Has Microsoft adopted an even tougher stance on piracy? According to recent e-mails warning of new, harsher anti-piracy measures in Windows Vista, that was believed to be the case.
Australian PC World printed an e-mail Tuesday it says was sent from a Microsoft representative to an unspecified large Vista OEM distributor. The e-mail describes a new initiative which renders computers running a pirated copy of Vista unusable by making the screen totally black.
Microsoft was quick to debunk this e-mail warning of a Black Screen of Death. A Microsoft representative told Wired News "the reporter received inaccurate information," and that the company has not rolled out any updates to Windows Vista's anti-piracy platform.

Nice non-denial. Exactly what information was inaccurate? For all anyone knows, MS is going to roll this out next month instead of this month, and they haven't rolled out any updates to Vista's anti-piracy measures because they're already baked into the OS. All they need to do is flip a switch on the WGA servers. When it comes to MS' public statements, you either have to read between the lines, or parse it like a legal document where you don't infer anything not explicitly stated.

#2: I would welcome some actual intelligent discourse instead of snipes, but I know that debate is something you don't generally engage in.
Microsoft could have said something along the lines of how the story is totally untrue and this system or technology does not exist. Instead, they offer vagaries about 'inaccurate information'.
Well, if it is true then time will tell. And, based on the WGA fiasco, it should be simply a matter of time before said system burps and screws over thousands if not millions of people.
"The more you tighten your grip, Microsoft, the more systems will slip through your fingers."

#3, Why, by virtue of responding at all, would Microsoft communicate so much as a passing [dis]interest in something so obviously ridiculous?

#4: Thanks for playing!
#5: If it is a hoax and such a thing really, truly does not exist, then MS needs to come out with a much stronger statement of reassurance than the ambiguous 'inaccurate information'.

#6, Latch, C'mon... so one could assert anything and MS would have to respond?
Ok... here's one... Vista will kill puppies - yep. everytime a Vista PC boots, a puppy dies.
Ok - nutty rumor and now MS had better fire up the PR engine and get to refuting it.
Ya know... it is possible within free expression, for so much latitude to be offered that whatever the intended message may have been, it just ends up completely lost and those exercising too much latitude come to be regarded as simply foolish. I know there hasn't been much in the way of press out here for you to e..hem, "latch" onto, so maybe it's best to just wait.
...I wonder what happens to guys like you when people all figure out how to get along and all tech simply works with all other tech... what then...? do you declare war on puppies and work to convince us that their breath really doesn't make even the meanest of us coo and somehow feel more gentle inside. Is that how it works? Is all this MS stuff just "next" - the next thing to piss and moan about? Here's one for you... stray cats - I am convinced they are alien probes wearing fur. How about you start a march, or some moveout.org site to rid us of the stray cat? or peanut butter - yeah, that's a real problem - stuff just sticks to everything - come up with a new, non-sticky PBJY sandwich...
See what I mean... sometimes it's just ridiculous - so be patient - wait for a story that has some basis for your comments. just ask'in...

#7: so one could assert anything and MS would have to respond?
This isn't just some frother in a forum or blog. This is PC World magazine (Australian edition) which carries a little more weight.
Ya know... it is possible within free expression, for so much latitude to be offered that whatever the intended message may have been, it just ends up completely lost and those exercising too much latitude come to be regarded as simply foolish.
The content of the email seemed pretty clear to me, being that it was written in plain English and spelled out exactly what the story claimed.
I wonder what happens to guys like you when people all figure out how to get along and all tech simply works with all other tech... what then...?
LOL, nothing would happen because this fantasy world will never exist. Your master, Microsoft, is working long & hard to prevent this panacea of interoperability that you claim will some day envelop the world.
When it comes to MS, I've learned to never discount anything no matter how bizarre. Just today we're hearing about MS forcibly updating your system even though you have Windows Update turned off. What next?

#8, Ahhh... see, now we come to what really differentiates us....
I and a great many others DO believe that we have the ability to make change and to make things better - and one day, perhaps soon, achieve that world guys like you dismiss as a fantasy.
We work for that and along the way, make the best of what is around us - to improve what we can actually, practically change and accept that which is imprudent to assume that we can change. Big things and small things... that some weather will be bad. Some people will get sick - these just are - but the difference is that we believe that new medicines may be found and that new structures may be built to better weather... bad weather.
You seem to look for what is wrong and what is bad and then do nothing more than cry out and point fingers - as if that helps at all.
And you still didn't answer the question - what if and when it is... what then? It's a good question to ask.

#9: My Ketchum Tangent alarm is buzzing as I type this, but it's slow at work right now.
I and a great many others DO believe that we have the ability to make change and to make things better - and one day, perhaps soon, achieve that world guys like you dismiss as a fantasy.
A lot of people believe in the Easter Bunny, but that does not substantiate his existence. I am real enough to know the things I can change and the things that are essentially out of my control. I know that I cannot, myself, change MS' unethical business practices. However, I can inform others who may be lacking in information about MS. Believe it or not, I used to be a fan of MS for quite a few years, but I slowly started to realize what they really were (or had become) -- and I didn't like it one bit. Now I do my part to counter the spin, half-truths and whitewashing of history. Others choose to perpetuate it, or ignore it for whatever gain.
From what I can tell, the weather is not working against the common good for its own ends while blowing smoke up everyone' ass. However, your comparison to Microsoft and a virus is compelling.
You seem to look for what is wrong and what is bad and then do nothing more than cry out and point fingers - as if that helps at all.
What would you suggest I do? Spend more money on MS products? Call up Bill & Steve and give them shit? If I can get one person to start looking at MS with a more critical eye instead of blind, fawning praise, I have made a difference whether you want to admit it or not.
And you still didn't answer the question - what if and when it is... what then? It's a good question to ask.
No, it's an irrelevant question to ask that attempts to deflect the discussion away from the topic at hand. Simply out, if MS stopped being an unethical, predatory monopolist that will do anything to maintain their monopoly, I would stop complaining about them. Happy now?

#11: I do use the truth and facts. You refuse to accept either, but that is not my problem. I admit that I will sometimes exaggerate for satirical purposes, and I have made mistakes, but I do not lie. In your world, Microsoft is almost saintly, Vista is perfect and anyone who doesn't buy from Microsoft is an idiot. Who is the nut on a crusade again?
