Autopatcher shut down by Microsoft | |

Autopatcher, a frequently updated project devoted to compiling all the Windows Updates into a single installation package (geared toward offline system updating and quick system rebuilds), has been shut down by Microsoft as of yesterday (08/29/07). Citing security and intellectual property as reasons for the action, Microsoft contacted the site owners of Autopatcher and Neowin.net (which housed an Autopatcher support forum) with a legal takedown notice, demanding that the download and support pages be removed immediately. As a result (as if there could be any other outcome), downloads and support forums were taken down as of yesterday afternoon. | ||

| I think is right in shutting down distribution of any MS patches that aren't directly from the source. With patches being managed by third parties, there is no guarantee that the binaries haven't been somehow altered. I understand that MS either supported or at least tolerated this, but the potential liability in a hacked or virused patch from a non-MS source is large. |

I believe the actual patches downloaded were official microsoft sourced.

noting the date and time, i say for the first time - "i agree with latch".
autopatcher only lasted this long, because the firefox users wanted updates, but windowsupdate wasn't available to them. |

| #4: What? Since you can't really remove IE from Windows, how were FF users prevented from using IE to access Windows Update? With the IETab extension, you could even use WU from within FF. |

This is kind of a sad story to me personally.
I knew some of these guys in the early days - sponsored them and sent free systems to some. We admired what they were doing. I MUST conclude that this is entirely WGA driven - as for years prior to WGA and the wide availability of broad band, MS seemed to look the other way - after all, the guys at Autopatcher were working very hard to keep Windows systems patched and safer.... I would prefer to see Microsoft really embrace these guys and enable them with help and software and help them build a largely off-line WSUS system for the mass patching of systems - of course, MS will insist that tools already exist - and they do - WDS and BDD being there for any admin to use all day - and they work just as well and in most cases, better than AP did. Still, for the single users out there in dial up land, AP was a blessing - so again, I insist this has to be WGA driven and for that reason, the shutdown is just sad - especially since AP included a WGA gate check that ensured and protected MS! |

latch, by "firefox users" i refer to firefox unaltered by extensions and without going to IE for WU.
Are you really this dense? If you happen to have long flowing blonde hair, you should seriously consider moving to Hollywood. The dumb blonde thing consistently plays well there. |
