The patent-watchers over at Slashdot found this interesting submission: a patent application from Microsoft for an Adaptive heads-up user interface for automobiles. Reading through the obscure language of patents, we managed to glean that the engineers who came up with the system want to move all the information currently displayed on navigation screens, car stereos, cell phones, and instruments onto the windshield. The patent cites safety concerns with our current gadget-laden autos and selves, where people are constantly taking their eyes off the road to look at this or that screen. | ||

| Most people can barely drive with no distractions so I don't think this is a good idea. |

I see this as a good idea. Once the novelty wears off, you won't even notice the HUD until you need it... and, when you do need it, you'll be able to keep your eyes looking up at the road, rather than down into the car. Nevertheless, being distracted by information on your windshield is a lot better than being distracted by information on your dash or center console. You can react much more quickly. At worst, it's a lesser of two evils.
This is a good first step. The next step is car-wide voice activation. That's when this HUD technology will really come into its own, I think. Imagine operating the CD player by repeatedly saying "Next Track" and checking the HUD until you get the song that you want, all without ever looking down or taking a hand off of the wheel. | u could put a game of pacman on the windshield and SOME people would be less distracted than OTHER people talking on their cell phone. Seriously, there needs to be a test given to drivers... because we are not all "created equal" in our ability to use the phone whilst driving. |

I have the HUD "Heads up display" in my car and ... I love it; I would buy another BMW just for it.
#6: you raised an interesting point; the technology is not really new, it has been around for at least 25 years. I think MS patented some peculiar way of interacting with the info displayed more than the concept itself. Now if more automakers could deploy it maybe the cost could drop too. |

I remember that Pontiac had their odometer in their hud on windshield sometime in the 90's... I think either Grand Am or Grand Prix.. This post was edited by budmanjr on Sunday, August 26, 2007 at 05:38. |
