India Won't Endorse Microsoft's Office Standard | |

India has become the latest country to reject Microsoft’s global bid to provide an alternative standard for electronic office documents. India will now vote against Microsoft’s proposal at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in Geneva, joining countries like China and Canada. After a meeting of the Bureau of Indian Standards in New Delhi Thursday, its technical committee chairperson, Nita Verma, told the media: “We unanimously agree on the disapproval of OOXML [Open Office Extensible Mark Up Language] with comments. The same will be submitted to ISO.” | ||

| #2 I think it was quite clear that the keyword there was "standard" (i.e. including the quotes) which, quite rightly, the world does not need. What we want are open standards that anyone can implement - not some half-assed api based on incomplete documentation gather from pre-existing (and in places incorrect) help files which includes such beauties like "GoAndDoThisLikeWord95DidIt" which aside from the ridiculous name, doesn't include any details on how Word 95 did it! |

I'm surprised ActiveSnooze isn't posting the various stories of MS stacking the committees in every country they can to force a Yes vote. It's amazing how there are usually few players in the committee when the spec got dropped on them, but then suddenly the membership increases tenfold with the majority being MS and its partners. What does it say when you have to cheat & buy a standard?
Just over the weekend it's come out that there are more proprietary crap in MSXML, like OLE and SPP, that can't be reproduced by anyone but MS, and that the proprietary (there's that word again which seems at odds with what a standard is supposed to entail) tags in MSXML are explicitly NOT covered by their patent covenant. Go ahead and implement MSXML, but don't do it too well or MS may throw lawyers at you at their whim. |
