Amazon leaks price, date of first Windows Home Server box | |

Details and prices of the first home server running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Home Server software were posted briefly on several online stores yesterday. Systems are scheduled to ship Sept. 15 at prices starting at $599. According to listings on such e-tailing sites as Amazon.com, PCMall.com and onSale.com, Hewlett-Packard Co.'s MediaSmart Home Server will be sold in two models at prices of $599 and $749. The pair are identical with the exception of the amount of included storage: the $599 server contains 500GB, while the $759 unit offers 1TB. Both servers will be powered by a 1.8-GHz Sempron processor from Advanced Micro Devices Inc., and come bundled with HP's Photo Webshare software, an add-on to Windows Home Server (WHS) that builds a photo-sharing Web site and serves it from the MediaSmart box. None of the for-sales listings spelled out the amount of memory in the servers, however. | ||

I want to see the price of the software alone. I have more than enough computers to build up my own, including a server that has a 6 disk 1.8GB RAID 5 in it.
I hope the 3Ware 9500S-8 controller is compatible with it. It's compatible with Server 2K3, which WHS is based on. TL |

#1, TL, WHS is not intended to use RAID. Though it can, it isn't recommended at all - and yes, it can use any controller W2K3 has drivers for.
Here's the deal: WHS is awesome - the most interesting product MS has produced in several years. It also has a very solid SDK for devs to add to and many are. For self/small OEM builders, WHS works best when one starts off with a single and very large drive upon which one installs the WHS software. Once the WHS SW is installed, then one may begin to add additional drives. WHS uses dynamic disk storage technology from the MS Storage Server group - so people never have to worry about or remember drive letters of any kind - WHS supports as mush space as is needed and that space just "is." Protection for stored data and backups of supported client computers is achieved by adding additional drives and then setting up duplication, which will then start storage balancing - this is the silent duplication of designated data. Setting up duplication is a snap and there is no set up for balancing. I would avoid RAID for regular users - asking customers to maintain a RAID array is exactly what WHS attempts to avoid. |

Don't care about raid.
I'll unstripe the drives. I just need them to run off the 8 SATA ports on the card. Plus, that will give me back 600GB of space :) It's a six 300GB raid-5 that nets me 1GB due to 1 drive for parity, and another as a hot online ready-spare for fail-over. TL |

#3, If W2K3 server has a driver for it, you may use it.
***Start off with only one drive attached. Do not add any files and do not start your backups on WHS until you have added the remaining drives [takes only a moment]. *****This is due to the fact that the largest file you will ever be able to move, will be equal to the free available space on your primary drive. WHS will see the one large drive, its initial remaining free space, and that will set the top end for single file size moves. So, never use a tiny drive to start with and add at least one large drive right away. |
