IBM takes Microsoft to task over SOA | |

IBM has taken Microsoft to task over its service-oriented architecture (SOA) approach, claiming the software maker relied too much on Windows-oriented, proprietary standards. Service-oriented architecture, or SOA, links business applications to provide services. By creating an architecture where applications communicate with each other, using protocols including Extensible Markup Language (XML), the aim is to enhance business processes. SOA requires open standards to link applications. These can be produced by third-party vendors or in-house. IBM said on Monday that Microsoft's approach to SOA was stymied by its emphasis on linking Microsoft-compatible processes. | ||

| The author doesn't have a clue about the SOA approach of Microsoft. For example, since when is a document format (OOXML) part of a "service"-oriented architecture. The document makes no mention of BizTalk nor Windows Communication Foundation, nor the support of SOAP in many Microsoft products. The author says that Microsoft's SOA only works on Windows, and I call hogwash on that. Yes, they have proprietary protocols, and not everything is SOA, but where they are SOA, they follow the standards and allow for an impressive amount of extensibility and openness. |

I would guess that Microsoft Biztalk and related technologies are eroding IBM market share. I will be willing to bet that a Biztalk driven solution will beat the IBM equivalent in speed of development and cost.
IBM is all about selling you their software/technologies and having their people do the development at $200 per hr (and don’t forget their project managers charge $400 per.) Then they sell you support contracts that eventually get outsourced to India. |
