Popfly, Microsoft's mashup tool for non-programmers, stands to tap a ripe market for the software giant. The man behind the idea, John Montgomery, group program manager for Popfly, discusses his thinking on the concept with eWEEK Senior Editor Darryl K. Taft. So, what was it that prompted you to raise your hand in the first place to deliver this? There were a couple of things that happened. One was I'd been sitting in developer marketing for a very long time and watching sites like MySpace and Facebook grow and realizing that every person who tricks out their MySpace page is a developer. But Microsoft had no offering for them and, in fact, nobody had an offering for them. The tools … if you look at how you customize a MySpace page, it's awful. It's just not a good experience. And I thought, there's just got to be a better way of doing it. | ||

| #2: MS has its place, just not at the head of the table in Heaven as many here believe. I was making a joke about MS using a lame name like Popfly. Popflies are generally a Bad Thing(tm). |

The BETA has been very fun and the direction this can take is pretty much endless - the points being made are that the tools used by most sites for users just stink and that tools on and like PopFly can provide for a much richer experience for both the member and what the member can create - that's the point.
Latch does have a point about the branding/name - the connotations aren't positive. I don't know who is at MS in regard to branding/marketing, and I'm not so sure any of us should be critical of them - I mean, they do post crazy high sales and profit numbers and yes, the argument about their software being so dominant is there and that no matter what they call anything, they will still sell a ton of it... <add all other comments we've all heard> Still... I look at iPod <the name> and I see a small thing that holds other small things - and some "i" thing <the Internet> which provides access to those small things.... I see "Zune" and I see a brand that has to be built, which is okay - it just doesn't impart right off, what it is or does. PopFly, Silver Light, etc... - more of the same - a brand, which pleases marketing folks and confuses the rest of us.... FLASH? well, right off I think Fast, quick, light, instant.... etc... You may get what I am saying. Any way... I'm rambling... regardless of the name, give PopFly a try... it is fun as it gets and one may see the potential, which if it powered sites like FaceBook and MySpace, Live Spaces, etc... would be pretty powerful and result in a lot better pages for "Friends" <my, they use such an important word so casually> to look at. |

| Latch doesn't realize that a popfly is usually good if your team is in the field. He probably would have preferred Can O' Corn! |
