Hungary competition authority raids Microsoft office | |

Hungary's competition authority (GVH) said it had raided Microsoft Corp's Hungarian subsidiary because it suspected the firm had abused its market power when dealing with software distributors. "The competition authority on July 19 carried out an inspection on site without previous warning at Microsoft Magyarorszag Kft," the GVH said on its Web site. "The GVH sensed that (Microsoft) likely applied a system of conditions and benefits -- rewards for loyalty -- for the most significant software distributors which gave no incentive to these distributors in selling other products competing with Microsoft Office software," it added. | ||

| More details are needed to understand this article. On the surface, rewarding loyalty should not be a crime, depending on the nature of the "reward". |

seeing that i currently live in Hungary i can fill u in. the authorities performed an unnotified inspection of Microsoft Hungary and they found many suspicious transaction/contracts for computer stores, oems, etc... the deal was they were locked into contracts that only allowed them to sell microsofts stuff and no others were able to be sold withoput breaking the contracts. so you see it is not about royalties but it is the similiar case with the EU and Microsoft. the GVH feels there is contradicting practices of microsoft seeing that they just lost a law suit recently within the EU. this leads to price hiking, etc... i remember while living in S.F. and trying to buy Wordperfect. impossible thru stores or online.
