Will Microsoft, Apple renew their Office vows? | |

AFTER NEARLY FIVE years of living in technological harmony, two of the biggest names in personal computing are due to renew their vows. In August, a contract forged in 1997 between Microsoft and Apple Computer will expire, leaving both companies legally unchained. While the companies declined to comment this week on whether they plan to renew the contract, analysts and company officials said the technical cooperation, such as the development of Microsoft's Office software for Macintosh computers, will continue. | ||

Who cares. If Office for the Mac makes money, Microsoft should continue to sell it. If it doesn't make money, they should not be forced to subsidize it.

Actually, Apple supports Darwin Streaming Server and FileMaker for Linux. And WebObjects is 100% Java... although they only say they support Win/Mac for dev, and iPlanet/Solaris/Win/Mac for deployment. Not exactly there complete lineup, but not exactly nothing either. Of course, these are primarily server products. There is the issue for them of non-standardization; they get around this by saying their Linux version is for Red Hat 7. Let's see if we can cut through the politics, rhetoric, and other time-wasting nonsense for a few facts.
First, Microsoft isn't about to stop making Office for the Mac. I don't have the exact figures I saw quoted, but Mac Office is one of Microsoft's most profitable products. It accounts for a major chunk of revenue in Redmond, and in fact easily supports a 100 + person developer team (The Macintosh Business Unit) at Microsoft. If Microsoft were to simply stop doing Office/Mac, the Revenue loss would be easily large enough to prompt a class-action Lawsuit againsts Microsoft by their own shareholders. And as someone else said, though any thought that Apple is really dependent on Microsoft is laughable (though I can understand the thought gives some PC critics a warm-fuzzy feeling to say it), Microsoft would never bring the anti-competitive backlash against itself that such a move would bring. If you look at this in a realistic, non-political, non-fanatical way, this is a NON-ISSUE! TL |
