Microsoft learns a web-standards lesson | |

Microsoft has learned some very serious lessons when it comes to complying with web standards after taking heavy criticism from the industry and, more importantly, a beating in the browser market share. In a video interview last month, Microsoft blogger and group manager of technical community, Frank Arrigo, explained how important it is for the Redmond giant to follow web standards. "Standards are important," said Arrigo, who admitted that Microsoft had been guilty of ignoring them in the past. "If you look at IE6 [Intenet Explorer 6], we didn't quite follow all the standards but standards are important... IE7 as an example is trying to address that." | ||

| #1: Just because MS has supposedly learned a lesson, it doesn't mean they're actually going to do anything about it. And, man, it takes MS a lonnnnnnng time to learn lessons. Web devs have been bitching about IE's lack of standards support for about a decade now (Imagine, Microsoft ignoring global standards in favour of proprietary extensions... who woulda thunk it???) But now that MS has seen the light, things will be good. |

Most internet standards were formed in a room with a couple of IBM employees who did nothing but shill for bad standards that explicitly were designed to be not-Microsoft.
Like ODF. There is nothing magical about a "standard" other than the fact so few people actually work on them. And most are a huge kludge. |

Now that the techie browser of choice, Firefox, is seeing 25%+ market share in Europe, Microsoft has decided that standards may be important. Sorry, Microsoft, but proprietary IE only gets you so far outside of your zealot following. I like how 41.3% in tech savvy Finland choose Firefox. http://www.xitimonitor.com/en-us/browsers-barometer/firefox-march-2007/index-1-2-3-77.html It's interesting how non-Microsoft, but still American, products do so well in Europe. Borland has a huge following in Europe especially with it's Delphi dev tool. Obviously, Europeans don't hate all things American. Be sure to follow the result page link--it's good for a laugh especially if you're a student of history.) |

| #6: MS always learns when its bottom line or dominance is at stake. When users are crying out for salvation, MS is deaf, but when the competition comes knocking, MS has an epiphany. We've been saying for years that IE was a piece of crap when it comes to standard support, and all the MS muppets denied it. Now we have an MS guy going on record admitting IE was a piece of crap from the perspective of standards support. Good to see MS hoist by its own petard. For years they deviated from the standard to make the web as proprietary as possible (gotta love that lock-in!), and now it's finally biting them in the ass. |

#5 Thanks! Its good to be right. I've seen no refutation. I think the comittee to approve ODF had 7 people on it. No wonder it is so flawed.
I see Malaysia has caught on to the dishonest pro-ODF tactics: "There has been unprofessional conduct and a lack of ethical standards among some members of the technical committee," he told the Star.
