Microsoft offering Office 2007 for rent on a monthly basis | |

Looks like Microsoft’s intial pilots of pay-as-you-go pricing for Office were successful. Microsoft has expanded its Office rental trial in South Africa to include Office 2007. Microsoft will make Office 2007 available for 199 rand ($28.54) for a three-month subscription, according to a Reuters report. First-time users willg et an extra three months for free, Reuters said. (Thanks to Bink.nu for the link to the Reuters story.) Microsoft has been testing pay-as-you-go schemes for Office 2003 in several developing countries, including South Africa, company officials said earlier this year. At that time, Microsoft officials said the Office rental trials were also in full-swing in Mexico and Romania. #1, I voted "No"
I like to own what I use, and only rent what I have to. The rest I gain access to in one type of business deal or another. e.g., I do work for the satellite carriers and regional installers - so when it comes to getting that sort of thing, I don't rent it either, I own it by owning responsibility for the relationship and the services we provide them - managed bandwidth, routes, etc... Like I've told you, the only thing we buy is raw bandwidth, tools, and components - the rest we build. |

| #8: It was meant as a joke. A compelling case can be made for rented software, but you can't make an informed choice without firm knowledge of the release cycle. I'd rather pay $100/yr for a $500 software package that is updated every 4 years, but not $100/yr for a $300 package updated every 4 years (obviously). People who would not pay $300-500 for Office may pony up $50-75/yr. |

#9, The challenge with a services over software and rent as one uses it, vice a software over services model where one owns a license to use the software is that the incentives [very human behavioral] to create new versions and move the science and products forward are removed.
I have to ask, would the new ribbon interface have emerged from company where the majority of customers rented access to the software? Would integration with SharePoint services, Exchange, Live Meeting and other servers? I don't think it would have happened as quickly - if at all. Humans have to aspire - if we don't there is no reason and no motivation to move forward and we get happy little things like the dark ages, the former east block and socialized, watered down systems bled dry of any value. |

Interesting statement. I'm not sure I follow you though as I don't see any end-difference in the software regardless of how it was purchased. I'm making the assumption that the product is the same for either method of acquisition. You could argue that these developments may have happened faster if more people could have afforded the software in the first place. |

#11, If there is a society based upon "ownership" then there are incentives - one may build wealth - and not just get rich.
In history, where there is not an ownership society, there have been no incentives, but one... to do as little as possible. Without such incentives, life itself is cheapened.... in an ownership society we fight tooth and nail for every life - often sustaining lives well beyond any expectation. That effort improves the quality of life and the length of lives for all. Where there are no incentives, people coldly step over dead bodies as they get on a bus for work [I have seen that in more than one western EU democracy, where people died of a heart attack... the emergency services arrived.... failed and left the guy for the next service truck to haul off]. In the states that does not happen. It's an ownership society and as such everything is valued more - including life. In the same situation as above, two cops cars would have been there with a fire truck and an ambulance and even if they failed, the ambulance would have transported the body for a complete post mortem answering why the person died. We have to do everything possible to ensure that the largest number of people become owners - of homes, businesses, property, and all that adds up to create wealth they can use to move the next generation beyond what they achieved. That means we have to own our software, too. |

Reading your statements about Europe I wonder which places you visited.
Once my wife and my daughter, who was 3 at the time, were in Rome, Italy; in the middle of the night the child started to complain about sore throat and the fever was raising. My wife took her to the Hospital where a Doctor assessed the situation and assigned a priority code, after ten minutes another Doctor visited her, prescribed some pills and a spray for the throat, gave them a box of the needed pills and two of the spray. After that they signed the release form and left. Nobody at any time asked, or to better say questioned them, about insurances or credit cards. Note that my wife does not speak Italian and in spite of this nobody asked them about citizenship or any other questions. Hospitals there are populated by doctors and paramedics and not by accountants and bookeepers dressed as doctors as we have here. Maybe you got confused between what happen there and what happens here every day. |

#13 He's not confused - he just thinks of healthcare as a profitable corporation rather than a basic necessity as most countries in the world think of it, including those European ones he likes to sh*t on so much.
It's interesting that you mentioned Italy, when I was young I twisted my ankle there. An ambulance took me to hospital where I stayed in a room with only 1 other bed for a week. No-one asked, mentioned or demanded any money for any of it. The only thing they were interested in was my health - i know, shock, horror, that's the thing only those who can afford it should be able to get, and only after we've ensured that they've paid their bill! |

| #17 Perhaps it was the USA - when the medics arrived they firstly checked if the person having a heart attack has insurance - if they didn't, they moved on. But it's easier to say it happened in Europe. |

I'm not saying this didn't happen, but if it did happen in the US, there would not only be a lawsuit of epic preportions, but likely jail time as well. The US HealthCare system is a wierd animal that is entirely based on monetary gain instead of human assistance (epecially in the area of pharmacuticals). However, denying care to a _critical_ patient just isn't allowed as far as I know. Does it happen? Sure. But it's not supposed to and those that do it usually end up paying. No, the US Healthcare system typically provides the care first. THEN they take your house, car, belongings and anything else you own to pay for it. TL |

Boy... sorry to have used the example... but it did happen - once in Germany and once in France and it was weird, but oh so practical - see, there are classes of emergency services vehicles - and only a few have ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life-Support personnel. So in the even the ACLS team fails, they move on to the next case, leaving the body for more numerous, but less well equipped med services teams. Ironically, they partially wrapped the corpses in the same lime green plastic.
The differences are cultural and many. Like all else, in the US the private healthcare side of the house is all about competition - docs are like rock stars and frankly, I like that - I want an A-list Doc working for my teams and family. I want it to be as competitive as anything else is. There is a private healthcare side in the EU, too - problem is it is only available to the very few that can afford it - and finally, care to go over a list of foreign heads of state that come to the US for surgery? It would surprise many, but not me - I'd come here, too. Oh, In my company, I fully fund 100% of all healthcare - even the tax on the benefit - so the team does not have to think about it, or pay for it at all - that is how it should be and by doing a great deal of extra, un-funded work for premiere providers, I am able to ensure that our guys have not only the very best, but the very best on our terms - e.g., like when I call and say I have a man that is ill in any way - the Docs were work with come to us, or turn on a dime and take care of us. That is competition, too and it sure helps make certain that the men are cared for - and that is also the job of every business owner out here. Personally, I don't want to be mistaken - I am not saying a thing other than individual responsibility is where it is all at - I do mean all and it is up to all of us, and not some damn government to care for us. I want government to do two things - smack government like corporations around [yes, Microsoft, too] and I want it to build and use smart weapons - as many as it takes to keep the bad guys out of the wire. Aside from that, they can get and stay out of my life. |
