Microsoft hires 'Director of Linux Interoperability' | |

Microsoft has brought someone aboard to serve as its "Director of Linux Interoperability" and head up the Microsoft/Novell Interoperability Lab -- and his name will be familiar to people in the open-source community. In an e-mail late Thursday night, a Microsoft representative said the role will be filled by Tom Hanrahan, who was most recently the director of engineering at the Linux Foundation, the group created through the recent combination of the Free Standards Group and the Open Source Development Labs. | ||

| Money is an amazing motivator. I remember back when when Microsoft raped Borland of some of their finest talent. Unfortunately, everyone has a price that they are willing to sell-out for when it comes to business. |

| This could play out in a few different ways. Is this in the same spirit as their overuse of 'innovation', when everyone knows they innovate very little? Hire a guy and call him your Director of Linux Interop and maybe people will believe you're working on Linux interop. It's worth a shot. You can always fool some of the people some of the time. Or is it another of MS' favourite tricks, where it calls it 'interoperability' but it's really a one-way street to MS? Either way, it's just posturing -- sound and fury, signifying nothing. |

What happened to the good old days where Steve Ballmer was telling us all that Linux = communism and how he brainwashes his kids to make sure that they don't use Google and iPod's? I miss those days, I guess these days it's OK to interoperate with those damn communists.
#3 "Money is an amazing motivator." I think that lack of money is an excellent de-motivator rather than money itself being an amazing motivator. Sure most people have a price, but you won't necessarily work harder because you're getting paid more, but you definitely will not work as hard if you're constantly upset about not getting paid enough. Microsoft did very well out of their "Borland plan" - i.e. steal their best talent by offering them large signing bonuses of several millions of dollars and other incentives. Borland even tried to sue Microsoft over this. #5 He's just a director, he doesn't actually have to work on any interoperability... maybe just make a comment to the press that the PR people created for him. #6 Depends how you do it now doesn't it. Oh wait! What am I saying? This is Microsoft, they can do whatever they want to whomever they want! |

| winux - you bet they will. i saw a vid about a year ago of microsoft's rather huge linux lab. I think it was on channel9.com maybe. if interested, i suggest you take a look. It was rather impressive (hardware, at least). |

How about (Borland) paying them equally? Didn't Google "steal" some people from Microsoft exactly the same way? |
