CIOs are evenly split between Microsoft's .Net technology and the Java platform when it comes to rolling out web services, according to the latest survey. One hundred CIOs polled in a survey across Europe and the US by investment bank Merrill Lynch said price is their main criteria when choosing a solution. | ||

The fact that Microsoft got 1% against Java is huge.
Considering that .NET has only been out for less than a month officially, and that many CIOs are considering it is a huge deal |

#2 (adrianaw): I mean "at least 1%". I realize .NET is huge. You realize it's huge, but not everyone else realizes its huge.
I expected awhile for .NET to catch on. The fact that it's 50% now is really, really huge. That means that for all Java is worth, and all the time, money, and investment Sun has put into it, .NET is just that much better that 50% of the CIOs out there are ready to dump it and move to .NET TODAY. Man, I'm shocked. I knew .NET was that good and that it would start a new revolution, but I didn't expect it to start so soon! |

| #4: Um, Microsoft and IBM wrote most of the SOAP spec. Microsoft and IBM wrote WSDL and most of the other web services stuff. MS doesn't have to "embrace and extend" because it was designed right from the start unlike most protocols. |

steven1832 - I think they mean J2EE, not Java per se.
Anyway. We're seeing a ton of excitement here at work with regards to .Net. In fact there is an ongoing project right now to rewrite our main web application(A VB6/COM/ASP app) with .Net. If that project works out, .Net will become the new standard at our company. |

I worried about mono and the various other attempts at implementing the .NET Framework and the CLR on other platforms.
Most are very far behind v1.0 of .NET, and it only seems to be getting worse. If only all those open source advocates would kick it into high gear and get working... perhaps then they could difuse the "evil empire's" .NET bomb. :-) |

According to Eric Raymond Open Source development is far superior to the old model that Microsoft uses. It took Microsoft about 5 years to build .Net, so Mono ought to be done in 2 which means the end of this year.

Well considering that the BCL in Mono is nearly done, and the system is entirely self hosting on Linux and Windows. I would say that Mono is progressing fairly quickly.
I would estimate that they will be finished around Oct if not earlier on C# and the platform. Not to mention that it will probably be running on Sparc, stronarm and a couple of other chips by that time also. The main issue is how to support ASP.net and ADO.net which isn't part of the ECMA standard. And even those are taking shape. They are already targeting Gnome of course, but also QT(read KDE) on the GUI side. Quite possible there is a group working on the Apple os/x side also. Coral already has a beta 1 of the BSD Unix port. Again missing ADO.net and ASP.net. but there is talk on the Rover list, once Mono is done with it, that it could be complied into the rover platform. But considering that Some companies have started using .net at the beta 2 stage, that would be a 1 year start almost a 2 year start. But still at almost 5 years of Java's existance, to have 50% of CTO's considering using .net over J2ee is a MAJOR statement. El |

| #25 - well... if you have a large codebase all written in Java, it makes sense. |
