Microsoft denies XP Pro and .Net Server identical | |

Microsoft has refuted claims that .Net Server and XP Pro are interchangeable, after an old program called NTSwitch was shown to be able to change a computer running XP Pro into a .Net server. The application has been on the internet for years and purports to change a few registry settings within NT/Windows 2000/XP that can turn a server into a workstation and vice versa. But a Microsoft spokesman denied that a computer that was previously a workstation could become a server "with a flick of a switch". "It may give the appearance of looking like a server," said the spokesman, "because there are registry settings in the shell to make things say 'I am a server' on reboot. But it patently isn't a server, it doesn't have the technology." | ||

Jesus some of you are ignorant.
Having used this tool with NT 4.0 server and NT4.0 workstation here is the deal. That tweek basicly made a NT4.0 workstation into a server, if you then copied the extra server files such as dhcp dns\wins etc to the machine they would then install just fine if you also copied over the server inf files and reapplied as SP.. Dont rebate this I've done it and then used that server for years without problems. 4.0 shared almost everything. As for us fullness.. only reason I first did it was to get a copy of DiskKeeper Server version installed on the workstation...yes I pirated one copy..sue me.. dam 650$ server version should more then make up for it. I also wondered about this with win2k. I've not done it full course.. but I did use the tool to allow a certain package designed for workstation install on server and then flipped it back.. all is well with the box. My guess is with enough work one could do the NT4 copy tricks with win2k as well however they will likely be more involved and may lead to instability if your truelly using the box as a server type box. It is safe to assume although many raw\core compoents are the same ie.. files there are a far greater number of departures in win2k then in NT4. The same goes double for XP which is why the messly test showed instabillity... yes the kernals are likey still the same though .Net's now has changes that XP does not have. Is it possible to run the tweek tool to install software made only for a certain version... depends on the software.. but probably so if the check in only in the installer and then you can flip back after install.. would I recommend this.. no. I would also not suggest trying this really untill .NET server and .Net Workstation get back on the same release schedule... MS was really stupid I think doing that.. got no problem with them releasing XP home early.. but XP pro was a waste of time.. as the corporate market addoption of XP pro has proven... Corporate american is more or less skipping the XP release cycles and will do there next major upgrades with .net server and then whatever there going to call NT workstation 6 (as even ms's version for XP are 5.1) lol Bottom line NT3 (for sure) NT4 (for sure) and win2k all share nealy 75% or more of the same code.. I even remember some ms document in the 3.x time frame stating it was more then 95% the same code.. I'm sure that's gonna be more like 65% in the next release. |

Where exactly did you get an ISO of Datacenter? Datacenter is only available direct from OEMs, and is built specifically for each machine it runs on. (Hence the reason it can be so stable and fast.) |
