Dell Senior Vice President and General Manager, Jeff Clarke recently confirmed rumors on the Company's corporate blog that they would be entering the Tablet PC market later this year. The Company will be targeting its first Dell Latitude Tablet PC in three markets: Education, Health Care and the Corporate market place. “We have done a lot of engineering that makes it one of the lightest weight, convertible tablets in the market place. We have spent considerable time working on the interface to make it easier to use where it has a leadership technology in its pen and touch interface,”

Cool. Another choice of tablets for the office. Hope it doesn't come with Vista.

It's about time! If it's in the same league as the Lenovo/IBM tablet, they'll have a winner on their hands, especially if they offer something other than integrated graphics at that weight and size. The ThinkPad tablet is a very, very sweet machine, and integrated graphics-only is about the only knock against it.

oldog, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but if you watch the video on the blog, you will clearly see that its running Windows Vista, which is probably a good hint it will come preloaded.
I have some pictures on my blog:
http://adacosta.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!E8E5CC039D51E3DB!15955.entry
If its coming out late 2007, like around fall, it has a very small chance of even offering XP Tablet PC with Microsoft planning to discontinue supplying the market with it by January 2008. Also, Vista has improved Tablet PC support, so why bother downgrading the experience.
Lets just hope that Dell does it right and offer good value to the segments of the market they targeting. I made a couple of recommendations on their blog, do not include low end processors such as the Celeron or Sempron. Dedicated graphics would be good too and 1 GB of RAM minimum with full Vista 64-bit support.

Thanks for the info. But there are two HUGE problems with Vista on an underpowered machine like a tablet.
1) crap battery life (presumably even with Aero turned off).
2) to much disc thrashing for an under powered machine like a tablet.
#3 - I highly doubt that a non-integrated video option will be offered on any tablet PC. If you've used tablets you'll no doubt be aware that a major platform problem is excessive heat. In this regard they will probably always be equipped with the most power miserly hardware around.
BTW - the X60t running XP tablet edition is an excellent machine and well worth using if you need this type of device.

Thanks for the hints old dog. I guess we just have to wait and see, but you have too look at it as the technology having relevance after all. I just hope Dell plans to make the technology main stream by making it more affordable, especially for customers in the Education market. Toshiba, HP and Fujitsu have been doing a disservice for too long now.

#5, Oldog, what tablet PC's w/Vista are you using? We've shipped Toshiba's M200, M400 and R400 and the M400 and R400 with Windows Vista Ultimate. So far, the users have really liked the M400 and R400 and I have not seen the disk drive thrashing you mention. We do spend a lot of time preparing the tablet PC's with a custom image we prepare, so I can't speak to default OEM images. What configurations are the units you've worked with using - RAM, etc..?
I'd appreciate any feedback and if there are any models I should avoid considering for customers.
***Both the M400 and R400 have a very lightweight aux battery that is shaped like a shoe that places the tablet at a slight angle. Users like this as it presents the keyboard in an easier to use position and it well suites the use of the tablet in landscape mode. It is not a lot of money and it allows the user to go coast to coast w/o needing a charge and again, it is very lightweight and thin. Most of our customers that use tablet PC's are longer term tablet users - each in medicine. I don't know how many of you have seen automation come to the medical professions, but it is a big shift for them - especially where patient records and practice management are concerned. Most are used to penning the record and automating this process is a very keying intensive process that medical professionals do not like at all. Tablet PC form factors allow them to make great use of automation, yet retain the physical behaviors they are used to. Forget the imagery you see of professionals holding a tablet like one would a pad of paper - they do not do that - it is too heavy and places stress on the thumb of the non-writing hand. They lay them down, or place then in their laps as they work with a Patient. Also, where sterile procedure is required, any PC can be a problem - especially a tablet - they can be "Mung Magnets" so to speak. In these cases, only a slate is recommended and specialized fan-less case designs that can be made sterile, or isolated below sterile zones.

I'm using the Lenovo x60t. It is a fine machine as originally configured with XP tablet edition. After removing some crapware it runs very well.
I have not upgraded to Vista because the forums are replete with posts regarding problems with disc thrashing and battery life. Check out http://www.gottabemobile.com/ forums.
Understand that this computer if used as intended with a standard battery will have a typical battery life of about 2 1/2 hours. With an extended battery you can get about 3 1/2 hours of use before recharging. Anything that cuts into battery life makes these devices essentially unusable.
I think that solid state HDs will eventually make this technology unbeatable. Until then opt for lower performance (5400 rpm HD) with best battery life, coolest processor design and lightest weight.
