Security? NoPE: Vista Hacked Again, This Time Even More Effectively | |

This is not the first time we've mentioned a Windows Vista crack, and it won't be the last, but now a hacker group known as NoPE somehow managed to create a cracked Windows Vista DVD that works immediately, out of the box, with no serial number or activation keys required. Just like some of those corporate versions of Windows XP that worked for years, the hacked Vista product appears to be already activated and it even automatically updates itself with the latest patches. | ||

| The word for this hack should be that it's more "efficient" since it installs Vista without hassle. If its more "effective", than Microsoft shouldn't be able to turn it off when the user goes online at some point in the future. That's not likely. |

Um... I think that title is rather poorly-worded. This isn't really a security issue with the running OS, but with the anti-piracy mechanisms used in Vista. It's a bit of a strawman, since Microsoft isn't even claiming they can stop all piracy. The aim is to reduce casual piracy.
I am a bit bummed by the change for volume licenses from XP to Vista, though. It definitely gives the Linux folks some ammunition. |

| #2: I agree. It has nothing to do with security, and everything to do with piracy prevention techniques. The Vista volume licenses were changed primarily because it was the old XP corporate edition keys that were being leaked and used to install multiple copies using a single key. All the inconveniences in that regard are all in the name of piracy prevention. And with the much higher price of Vista, I can understand why they'd need more protection, since the perceived motivation to pirate Vista would be much higher. |
