(WAPA) - The US FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) is refusing to install Windows Vista, the new operating system developed by Microsoft, on the 45,000 computers used at its offices. The decision made by FAA followed an accurate evaluation of update costs generated by the new installation, for example taking into consideration the 1G RAM requirement. | ||

| The NYSE is also moving to AIX and Linux. I guess they're in a hurry to get buried in patent & IP problems like MS is warning everyone about with Linux. |

I have a friend who works at the FAA - it is one of the most mismanaged federal agencies. For years he has supported an IBM mainframe and occasionally he is asked to run usage statistics. They show that he is the only user.

I believe that the NYSE is switching to Linux *from* AIX. They are wanting to ditch the big iron from IBM, and use a cluster of Linux servers instead. |

#3 Yes, those IBM mainframes are very unreliable... they should switch to a Windows solution right away!
As for this story... come on... of all the things that one shouldn't worry about it's RAM... RAM is cheap! |

| #4: The article I read on this (not this one) said they were moving from mainframes to AIX & Linux. Perhaps it was a typo that should have been 'Mainframes on AIX to Linux'... who knows. The apologists here can laugh all they want as company after company, city after city and country after country look at the savings and escape from vendor lock-in that open source provides. |

#7: My post was not meant to impeach the reliability of IBM Mainframes, but to question the wisdom of a Federal agency that pays hundreds of thousands in support costs annually for a mainframe that no one uses. With this in mind, can we really trust any technology decision the FAA makes?

#10: By that logic, which may be valid, can we trust any decision at all that *any* government agency, in *any* country, makes?
