Amazon to offer DRM-free music downloads | |

Amazon.com plans to launch a digital music store later this year, featuring music downloads without copyright restrictions. The e-commerce giant announced Wednesday that it would offer songs from more than 12,000 record labels in the MP3 format, without the controversial digital rights management (DRM) software. Record labels are beginning to warm up to the concept of offering music downloads without DRM, after waging war with peer-to-peer companies over distributing their copyrighted music and over piracy issues. "Our MP3-only strategy means all the music that customers buy on Amazon is always DRM-free and plays on any device," Jeff Bezos, Amazon's chief executive, said in a statement. Users will be able to play their music on virtually any device, including PCs, iPods, Zunes and Zens, as well as burn the songs on CDs for personal use. | ||

| Hate to complain... but I wish it were in a better fidelity format than MP3. I'm a drummer and love classical music, and MP3 isn't kind to either. |

I agree. I've been converting my catalog over to WMA. It sounds better at the same bitrate, and 192k WMA is indistinguishable for me from lossless CD-quality, even when using good headphones. I won't use Amazon if they offer only MP3, especially not 128kb MP3 (they don't say what the bitrate will be, but that's a safe guess). #5, Sound advice and counsel.
Here's a thought - if people were more interested in quality than they were in obtaining media illegally, would there be any DRM? I recall a time when no one locked anything and my home didn't even have locks - we didn't need them. Simply, there were doors before there were door locks... |

| Personally, I don't like having to purchase something that I have already bought. I have a lot of vinyl in my basement collecting dust. I'd have to buy a turntable just to convert to MP3. I should be able to download any song that I have purchased, regardless of the format… at least in rxworld. |

#2: 320 CBR isn't too bad. Go FLAC or APE if you want compressed lossless. I'm also a drummer and don't know what you mean when you say mp3's aren't kind for drumming.
#7: While I have no love for the **IA, on this point I disagree. You are not owed any format-shifting. Digitize your collection and then you can shift formats to your hearts desire, so long as the **IA doesn't buy too much government to prevent it. |

#8: I'm not surprised, since we're both Rush fans. ;) When they were touring with Primus, it was kind of cool to see Tim "Herb" Alexander walking (without anyone bothering him, amazingly enough) up and down the floor aisle (to the sound board and back), then watching Rush's show from the front row fence. I wonder what % of the crowd were drummers....
Anyways, I just find that MP3 doesn't do cymbals justice. You can get decent quality at very high bitrates, but who's selling 320 CBR? And for classical music, even for fairly high bitrates, the stereo spatial "presence" and sense of space is altered. No compression format is immune to this, but at least they're more tolerable at the bitrates you can buy today (though even then, I wouldn't buy it unless it's at least 160-190 or better). |
