At the JavaOne conference in San Francisco this week, Java software makers will attempt to regain ground lost to Microsoft in the emerging market for Web services development tools and technologies. Sun Microsystems, Oracle, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard are expected to announce new software or tools to improve or fill holes in their product family, and battle the perception that Microsoft is leading the way in Web services, a method for building software that lets companies with different computing systems to interact and conduct transactions. | ||

Interesting. Yesterday I built a web service. Took me a couple of hours because it was my first time experimenting with ADO.Net and had to configure the right permissions on my web server. This was with my $90 Visual C# Standard edition tool. Now if I'd waited for Sun, how long would it have taken? How much would it have cost me?
I really need to get down and dirty with .Net. I have a couple of personal projects in mind to help gain familiarity. This is the most fun I've had trying to do development in years, I may actually go back into software development. This post was edited by sodablue on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at 01:32. |

#8 - I'm curious, but why must IBM derail MS? Why can't IBM support the standards that Microsoft has adopted so that I as a customer can utilize either product together?
I realize that it is Sun's goal to not adopt standards and derail MS, but it was my impression that IBM was working with the consumer, not against them. Syncope - A web service is not the same as a web page. Pretend I've already created the web service, and it exists. The specification is such that I as a consumer of that service can simply declare a new object which refers to the web service, and call it just like any other method. At least that's how Microsoft's implementation works. What Java has been calling web services is a convoluted, do a lot of stuff manually and get a response from the server solution. In principle it's a similar concept, but what makes .Net with SOAP unique is how easy and seamless it is. |

#11 - Either this article or another mentioned that IBM has the largest market share in terms of Java development tools, outpacing Sun by a large margin. Which is a problem for Sun, as they want to control this standard, but they also aren't making any money at it.
