Microsoft competitors plan to tell a federal judge this week that the software giant is using its monopoly power to shove out competition in emerging technology markets. The witnesses were taking the stand starting Monday on behalf of nine states that want Microsoft to be hit with strong penalties in order to restore competition and break Microsoft's Windows monopoly. The nine states want Microsoft to create a stripped-down version of its flagship Windows software that could incorporate competitors' features. The states also want Microsoft to divulge the blueprints for its Internet Explorer browser. | ||

| How would MS be doing it? It seems to me that Pocket PC handhelds or its previous incarnations have been around for years and MS had not een succesfull until lately when they gained a lot of market shares... because they kept trying to make a better product. In the same time the competition was, cough, cough sleeping and not investing in R&D because they did not consider Pocket PC a threat. Suddendly they realized that their forecasts were wrong and they want the Fed to cripple competition using tax payer money? These people have the worst business model I have ever seen and even worse there are people in the government that are listening to them. Why IE Browser blueprints should be divulged? Was it created by some government agency using tax payer money? No, it was developped by a private company and it belongs to that company. If other companies want they can invest in R&D, again, and come out with a better product. I live in FLorida and I am ready to show to our State Attorney what I think about this waste of public money at the next election. |

I get the impression that this new judge is much more knowledgeable than Jackson. She's not falling for the courtroom stunts, and is demanding real information be presented.
That does not bode well for the States. I am curious to know what development tools Palm can't get, and why Microsoft won't allow them to subscribe to MSDN. |

| #8 I agree 100%. Real Player is a horrible app. It looks like a sci-fiction movie with the aliens getting everywhere! It install itself in the desktop, the systray, start menu etc. Unless you choose not to accept all the stuff it comes with by default it changes file extension, subscribe you to everything etc.. No matter what you do it changes your registry settings and your preferences. If MS came out with something similar I can just imagine the Registry and other "sources of information" yelling about MS trying to dictate you what to do but... it is not MS so who cares? Btw if you install RaelOne don't forget to run Lavasoft to get rid of spyware software installed during the setup of this wonderful app. |

#7 - Actually I suspect the DOJ settlement is what will come from this. Allowing OEMs to remove icons and such for various middleware pieces is fine. Removing the functionality entirely in most cases is extreme, certainly in the IE case this would break the OS.
#8 - I don't know about Real. I installed Realone recently to get to some content. I don't mind that, but it also appears to have automatically installed itself as the default for playing WAV files, which displeases me. This definately presses the need to have official installation CD's for the OS and additional software when you buy a new machine. None of this image crap, because I want to take the machine back to a clean install of Windows. |
