Lenovo recalls extended-life laptop batteries | |

Lenovo on Thursday voluntarily recalled select Sanyo Electric lithium ion extended-life batteries used in its ThinkPad notebook computers. "Consumers should stop using the recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed," the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said in its recall announcement. Lenovo is offering a free replacement battery. The recall affects 9-cell batteries with the part number FRU P/N 92P1131. They were sold between November 2005 and February 2007 as an accessory for about $180. | ||

| "The defect is not with the internal battery cell, according to the CPSC statement. A blow to the corner of the laptop while the battery is installed, which might occur if the device is dropped, can result in overheating." This sounds like an odd reason to recall batteries, even if the statement is valid. If a laptop is dropped and lands on a corner, the battery isn't the only component that will act up. Time for a rebuild or a new laptop. |

| Actually, the 9 cell batteries are not fully contained within the Laptop like the standard 6 cell are. The 9 cell stick out more and are more directly subceptible to drop damage. |

| TechLarry: You are correct. The 9-cell is a nice battery with 4+ hour life but seems a bit odd when you look at it sticking out the back. I noticed that Compals' model A1200 has switched to an 8-cell battery. Drop either of them on a hard floor and the laptop becomes passive artwork. |

| #4, Yikes. 20,000 of anything is a lot. I bet your list of the most creative ways users have destroyed equipment is as amusing as it is taxing. |
