MS Mira beta: buy $800 web tablet, then pretend it's not | |

Beta testers of Microsoft's Mira wireless display devices are going to have to pay for the hardware, according to an email sent to testers yesterday and obtained by ActiveWin. Well, fair enough, you might think, it is hardware so there's a cost factor that's absent from the usual software beta, but it's $800 for an 8.4in 800x600 TFT unit, and even odder than that, it's not a wireless display at all - it's a full-blown appliance that can operate independently of the PC it's to be tested with. | ||

#2, I think the actual point of the story is this:
o The Mira-class devices are meant to be for the home... but require Remote Desktop, which is only in Pro. o The Mira devices (with the footprint of the beta device) are supposed to debut at about $500, but the beta hardware is $800. o The actualy hardware device used in the beta supports features that aren't supposed to be available until Mira 2, so the device would be 'crippled' for Mira 1. (Admittedly, when the actual Mira devices are released, this won't be an issue, but I wouldn't pay $800 for the beta hardware if I couldn't get those features back afterwards.) I mean, of course The Register is blowing the whole thing into an Anti-MS whirlwind, but I think they do bring up some interesting points... |

| So #5 you should have to pay roughly $300 more for the unit than it is supposed to sell for just to test it for free for MS? I think it should be free, since the testers do not get paid to test and it all helps MS to put together a better product, so in turn you should pay for that product as well. I am surprised that MS is basically charging its beta testers to work for free for them. Yeah that is a great idea. |

#4 - My understanding was that the Mira support was going to be in a Service Pack released later this year. Not the same as remote desktop, but similar.

#6 if you apply to test a beta OS don' t you need a computer in order to do it?
IMO the story is: MS invites you to test a new software; in order to be able to test this new software you need a specific piece of hardware and MS worked out a deal to allow you to get the required hardware at a preferred price. I don' t see what people are complaining about. |
