Google is working on a tool that will let you convert documents into a presentation much like Microsoft's PowerPoint does, according to the Google Operating System blog. The tool is dubbed "Presently," which is a play on the name of Google's Web-based word processor Writely, according to the blog posting. A Google representative said: "We're continually exploring opportunities to expand our offerings but we have nothing to announce at this time." Google has been releasing more and more productivity applications and other services as free, online versions, starting with Gmail. Last year Google merged its Documents and Spreadsheets products and the industry has been waiting for the next shoe to drop as Google expands its hosted services. | ||

Here we go again with the mysteriouso questioning headlines. The first line says, "Google is working on a tool that will let you convert documents into a presentation much like Microsoft's PowerPoint does" - so is the headline supposed to be a rhetorical question?

PowerPoint is used for creating presentations, not converting existing documents.
Please, please, don't tell me that someday I'll be responsible for some application like this one day in the boardroom when the wifi connection flakes and *poof!*, there goes the presentation. Ok, so presumably they'd create an offline client. But at that point, isn't anyone asking the obvious question: Isn't that the same dang thing as a rich client? I'm supposed to be excited about an offline AJAX-ed client built on the browser as its application foundation framework? Oh, and better yet, it's ad-supported. And if an update is introduced and it causes problems with some graphic or transition, well, too bad... no one is thinking of change management when it comes to web apps. Am I the only one missing the big buzz here? Google has been releasing more and more productivity applications and other services as free, online versions, starting with Gmail. Documents and Spreadsheets, Gmail, and what else? Really, how many is "more and more," exactly? Google is great and all, but honestly, this type of hype is ridiculous. Maybe they own some stock in the company or something? |

| Google Calendar kicks ass. I avoid the other apps except for Gmail, which is a great place to park backup files. |

| You aren't missing a thing, bluvg. Apps like these won't replace local clients until everyone's internet tubes are more available, reliable, performant, and pervasive. Even then, there are still plenty of reasons why you may not want your data dependent on servers/applications you don't control. Nice companion, but not a true replacement. |

Google's stuff may or may not be a bad idea...but PowerPoint seriously needs an absolutely graphically stunning overhaul. They should rewrite it in WPF or Direct3D or OpenGL. This post was edited by consumer4beta on Wednesday, February 07, 2007 at 10:09. |
