Vista: Where are the killer apps? | |

If you've seen any Windows Vista demos over the past year, you've probably seen Microsoft show off a handful of Vista-customized applications, like The New York Times Reader, North Face's kiosk application, and iBloks' multimedia-sharing wares. But where are the rest of the Vista killer apps — the ones that will convince users that they need Vista sooner rather than later? Sure, there's Office 2007, which will work "better together" with Vista than it will on Windows XP. But are there other Vista-exploitive apps in the pipeline — ones which take advantage of Windows Presentation Foundation, Windows Communication Foundation, the Vista Sidebar and Sideshow and other new Vista features? | ||

| #2, iLife's a killer app? - just like IMAP is a great protocol for mail... right up until one uses a full MAPI client and realizes what they were missing. What next... do we get a Big Chief notebook bundled with every purchase of MAC OSX? No thanks, I'll stick with Office 2007 - where the Home and Student version is available for consumers that do not need a more complete version. |

| The spam filter in Windows Mail, if the same excellent one used in Outlook 2003, makes Vista a needed upgrade. Why pay for the bloated and poor Norton Internet Security (or McAfee which also is poor) when Vista incorporates Windows Defender and a spam filter in Windows Mail and AVG Free 7.5 is better than Norton or McAfee AntiVirus at detection and cleaning? Vista is an OS. Why does it need a killer app? |
