Microsoft's new Windows Vista, which goes on sale on January 30, will not become the dominant PC operating system until 2009, research firm Gartner predicts. Vista's biggest competitor isn't Apple's Mac OS X or the geek darling Linux. Rather Microsoft's own Windows XP will be the main factor slowing Vista's growth, Gartner said. | ||

Microsoft will simply pull support for XP. They are in control of their own destiny here. Users really aren't.

Sounds about right. 2 years or so for Vista. A touch less for XP. | The only thing they could do with XP is decide not to release another SP. If not, they're on the hook for the well-established rule they have for the amount of time they support a Windows release. There aren't any surprises here. |
