THE NEWNESS OF Windows XP -- with its sometimes addled approach to license restrictions, copy protection, and security -- lends itself to confusion. Reader Tom Gleason sent me an example, quoting Web sites that claimed XP needlessly consumes 20 percent of your PC's network bandwidth. Like a lot of online talk, this is misinformed. Windows 2000 introduced QoS (quality of service) features using an Admission Control Service and the Internet Engineering Task Force's RSVP signaling. XP doesn't support these two protocols but provides its own QoS components. The QoS Packet Scheduler dialog box in XP Professional shows a default "bandwidth limit" of 20 percent. This created a buzz on the Web to the effect that XP artificially withheld one-fifth of your bandwidth, even if its Packet Scheduler was turned off. | ||

| I hope the EU is paying attention to this. Never mind erecting technological barriers to administering Windows clients, in this case, the technology works fine and is free and Microsoft is saying, despite that, that it's illegal to administer XP remotely with anything but Windows Remote Desktop technology. Yeah, MS has really learned its lesson. |

I dont know if anyoen posted this (i dont see it in the comments or the article itself) but microsoft made a kb article because of websites lieing to peoeple.
http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q316666 Look at the very bottom. If you want to blame someone, the blame lies 90% website and 10% ms. The reason i give the websites most of the blame is because if you look at materials it very clearly says the QoS is not for dialups. The reason i give ms 10% is because if you look at the info for the group policy, it is very misleading, and because at the time there was no microsoft kb article that said qos does not apply to dialups. However it's a websites responsibility to reserch articles to make sure there accurate. The sad thing is i doubt any website that said qos affects dialups will post a retration. -gosh |
