For Windows Vista Security, Microsoft Called in Pros | |

When Microsoft introduces its long-awaited Windows Vista operating system this month, it will have an unlikely partner to thank for making its flagship product safe and secure for millions of computer users across the world: the National Security Agency. For the first time, the giant software maker is acknowledging the help of the secretive agency, better known for eavesdropping on foreign officials and, more recently, U.S. citizens as part of the Bush administration's effort to combat terrorism. The agency said it has helped in the development of the security of Microsoft's new operating system -- the brains of a computer -- to protect it from worms, Trojan horses and other insidious computer attackers. "Our intention is to help everyone with security," Tony W. Sager, the NSA's chief of vulnerability analysis and operations group, said yesterday. | ||

I am sure that every foreign country will be happy to hear the NSA assist Microsoft in shaping their security code.
Would it make sense for them to leave in a back door? |

| Actually, they would be delighted - since most nations work together on such things and 1st, 2nd and 3rd party agreements and relationships have been around in this context for many decades. On the surface, governments often appear to be at minor odds with one another, but underneath, professionals from each all work very closely together and have since before most people visiting here were born. This is especially true amongst the agencies like the NSA and similar organizations around the world. It would please many people to know how stable and cooperative these relationships actually are. Equally, people would be proud of just how fiercely individual privacy is protected by the same. It drives everything about how and what the NSA and its sister organizations do. It isn't just about law, it is about doing what is right according to very clear directives as executed under the watchful eye of oversight. The people there are learned, decent and they care about what they do. They aren't just smart as they come, they are equally good and in every sense of that word. Most people can't imagine that, but they are there - every minute of every hour, of every day and their work has prevented this world from setting itself on fire more times than I can remember. |

| The NSA has been assisting OS makers for a very long time. Anyone remember DEC VMS? It had a lot of help from the NSA to make it secure. Same with Secure Linux, which was also greatly helped along by the NSA. That they are now helping Microsoft with their security is a good thing! |

This doesn't sound like a back door to me. It sounds like a super-admin account. |

| Linux "many eyes" thing ...I wonder how many "true" contributors there are to the open source software. And...more importantly how they earn a living, since the software is free. |
