Xbox 360 Announcements Leaked: IPTV, DVR, VOD | |

Dean T. of the Mercury News just made an oops and leaked some Xbox 360 announcements Microsoft was planning on dropping next week at CES. Not only does he mention the improved Xbox 360s with 120GB hard drives and HDMI ports, he also talks about the use of the Xbox 360 as an IPTV set-top-box. The leak says Microsoft's IPTV services will have instant channel change, multiple picture-in-picture, broadcast shows, video on demand, and DVR functionality—gotta use those 120GB for more than just trailers. | ||

Makes perfect sense. Increasingly, we are using Xbox 360 as a platform component.
Customers who would never consider buying an Xbox are using them to extend entertainment experiences and access the video marketplace. We've built three prototype systems to support pre-order sales of Windows Vista systems that leverage WMC and HD capabilities one can bake into such systems. Customers really like the access to the marketplace as well as the ability to extend WMC to other rooms. Customers are also discovering that there are games on the Xbox 360 that they do like - non-gamers that have found many family titles to be fun to play. These additions will make the offering even more compelling. |

| Agree with you, but its causing hell and all complaints in the 360 forums over what they feel is a much improved model of the 360 after just a year. I don't agree though as I feel HDMI is simply just a video port add-on with little benefit for most people, especially those who use VGA. The only annoyance I'd find is if the HD-DVD drive comes as part of it. |

#2, Yeah, it might chap the pants of some folks; however, we're seeng the Xbox 360 as one of the 2 of, 3 of and even 4 of, devices going into HD Home Networks.
On the surface it can seem silly, but a closer look reveals a different perspective. As a platform component, Xbx 360 is offering home-wide access to a wide variety of experiences and access to WMC and recorded, or downloaded content. It also serves as a capable DVD player. So what we are seeing is that the Xbox 360 is emerging as an alternative to the mix of components our customers would otherwise have to use - stand along DVD, additional digital cable box, etc... but unlike these devices, the Xbox 360 serves many needs, supports HD and in the end, costs less and is easy to integrate and use. I see the Xbox 360 as emerging as the best and most capable set top box one can use and its also great for integrators. |

I for one would consider a PS3 or Xbox360 for my family room as both products are easily the cheapest way to get high def videos into the plasma TV. Video games be damned. The only head scratcher is which format to choose. |

I think HDMI is not that big of a deal--it is not a guarantee of better video quality over component. Component cables seem to be much cheaper as well.
I would like to use the functionality of the 360 in some other situations, but unfortunately the "game console" aspect of it would rule it out. For example, having this as a wireless Media Center Extender in a conference room would be quite useful, but it would be rejected by many as inappropriate--for them, a game console doesn't belong in that setting. The dedicated Media Center Extender appliances might be OK, but the 360 is by far the best extender out there. |
