Now that Windows Vista has been released, many people have been complaining that in Redmond they really looked well at their OS building colleagues in Cupertino. They argument that a lot of things have been copied. A journalist from the New York Times shows that Windows Vista is no rip-off of Mac OS X. Check this (ironic) three minute video on YouTube: | ||

| I think that the reporter is kinda funny, and the way he presented all of this, rather than the ripping off. I think that Mac OS X ripped everything off. Why? All the thing Mac os X has, were already available in Windows Longhorn (I mean vista in an really early pat of development). I'm not some passioante Windows guy, but it kinda seems like Os X ripped it off. And to make it less obvious, they said that they didn't want to tell all of the features of Leopard..sounds suspicious to me... |

#5, Yeah, I think all on Awin do know that OSX borrowed from Microsoft's WDS 2.x/3.x BUT did manage to implement it ahead of Vista's business release by a good bit - that said, OSX does not nearly have DTS down as well - it's not as pervasive, or as flexible my a long way.
Apple rarely mentions their widgets - clearly taken from Konfabulator - the same could be said of Microsoft, but unlike OSX, which has to enter this weird systems state in order to use widgets, Vista's gadgets are a lot more accessible and available reagrdless of state. So the basis for the guy's comparison - if assessed, reveals an entirely different and more accurate story. None of that takes away from Apple's having moved these into their OS ahead of Vista, but noone should credit OSX over Vista in the context of the implementation of the examples used in this video - OSX wouldn't compare favorably and their features would seem both incomplete and rushed. |

| I don't think that milan221 realizes that Mac OSX has been around long before any Longhorn development. If he did, then he has made a joke along the same lines of this great video. I agree that he must be somehow involved with the pc guy, but who would be willing to bet that he made the clip setting in front of his MacBook Pro using the built in iSight Camera and iMovie HD? |

| Though this was humourous, I fail to see why this is considered to be news. After all, Microsoft has ripped off Apple and NeXT Computers for every GUI they have ever created. This is just one more in a long chain. The only thing novel here was the presenter's banter style, which I thought was quite entertaining, as I appreciate a sarcastic style of humour. |

| #8, I think it is truer and fairer to say that Microsoft and Apple borrow from one another in pretty much equal measure - and I'd bet that in each camp, there is at least a decent sized group that respects the other as well. I mean, MS MAC business unit work, as manifest in Office versions for the MAC, sure reflect people who care about their work and Apple supporting Win via Boot Camp or Parallels is a good sign of how they see MS. |

It's just a coincidence that this guy looks a lot like Steve Jobs, right... right?
It's funny that the guy has to point out "flippy triangles" to have enough examples to use. Someone should make a video taunting Apple for what they've "copied" from Microsoft. You know, I'm a huge Microsoft supporter, but when Apple finally implemented things into MacOS like right-clicking, I didn't go "ha, they copied MS!"; I said "about time!". I don't care if one developer takes ideas from other developers. What I do care about is when one developer has an outrageously cocky attitude, like Apple has, and which we can see here transcends to their fan base, unfortunately. |

Just think, every time you move a scroll bar to move text in a scrollable window, you are using an Apple patented construct. Heck, even the window itself is patented by Apple. Do a patent search online for Apple patents, and be prepared to be frightened. I am not saying that I agree with Apple having all those patents on every aspect of a windowed OS or application, but it does indeed have them.
To be more correct, Microsoft stole most of its early UI ideas from Apple. Apple did not steal them from Microsoft. Apple stole them from Xerox. Most of the Windows 95 look and feel was stolen directly from Apple and NeXT. NeXT had a quick launch bar type of thing long before MS stole the idea. Not that using the ideas from others is a bad thing. Microsoft has been quite successful with taking other companies ideas, and marketing the hell out of them for their own profit. I only have a problem when people claim MS invented those ideas themselves, without properly giving credit where credit is due. I am quite pleased with Windows XP, and might even like Vista, if it was priced more reasonably, and I actually had a PC at home powerful enough to run it. For now, I will stick with XP. It has been reasonably trouble free and works well. Of course, I am not exactly the typical home user, and have my home network fairly well locked down and protected from outside manipulation, and I don't fall for the usual virus spreading mechanisms through IE, as I use Firedox. And phishing attacks are just funny. I sometimes open them (carefully) just to see how good a job the person crafting the email did in his or her social engineering efforts. |

Rest assured that if what you say were true, then apple would have many of the billion$ in Windows profits. Instead, their case was so WEAK ... that they settled with Microsoft and sold them $150M in apple stock. |
