The resolution on HD-DVD titles is 1920x1080, that is around six times the amount of information that a DVD held, the brand new high definition codecs that are being used also work far better, these are one of the main reasons you will see less and less blocks appearing on screen and far better picture quality throughout. To get the full 1920x1080 resolution out of the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive you have to have the VGA cable, you can still get 720p resolutions from component cables, but for the full HD experience a VGA cable is a must. In our tests on a 1080p setup, these isn’t a massive difference between that and 720p, obviously though, the larger the screen, the better it is to have 1080p output. I also find that the VGA cable from Microsoft is the best way to view HD-DVD’s and for gaming on the system too in my mind. In component it tends to overdo the colours, while VGA is almost perfect. | ||

No DVI or HDMI? WTH!
Since HD-DVD requires HDCP, and HDCP only works over DVI or HDMI, I say again. WTH! TL |

| HD-DVD does not require HDCP at the moment...its likely to be a few years before it does...basically MS have said don't worry about it as it won't affect users during its lifecycle. |

| AACS requirements for output protection won't be enforced on HD-DVD until something like 2011. There have been rumors of an official HDMI cable, but no more than that last I checked. |

hddvd doesnt require hdcp ... no current hddvd's have it nor blurays
and the fact is as far as anyone knows from all aspects hdcp the ict flag has been delayd until 2010-2012 |

I have the unit and it has perfromed great for me. I am not worried about the HDMI situation. Either they will come out with an HDMI cable for it or by the time the protection schemes are implemeneted you will be able to buy a cheap standalone HD DVD player. I have a friend that has the toshiba HD DVD player and I had him bring it over and I switched between the two players at the same point in batman begins and I couldn't see any difference on my TV.
I don't know what people are talking about when they say the xbox is loud. Mine is only a month old and it is super quiet except for the sound of the disc spinning in the drive when you are playing a game. When using the HD DVD add on you have to get right up next to it to hear anything from the Xbox 360. The fan on my DLP TV is louder then it and it is extremely quiet. Hmmmm.... And those who bought non-HDCP HDTV's as early as 2 years ago have nothing to worry about. Or, those that bought new flat-panels as early as, well, yesterday, and expect to use HD on Windows Vista have nothing to worry about. Think carefully about who you are trusting here. If you like being on the cutting edge you have to be willing to take these bumps. I think the bigger worry would be that HD-DVD will lose the next gen format war. |

#6, On this one, I think TL has a very valid point - the rules aren't ours to preserve - they are "theirs" to change and the second violations start to hit sales and that is factored over adoption, I suspect we'll see the HDCP Tokens tossed out faster than we can catch them.
That said, I do think that MS can provide a means to manage it with some form of software "Hasp" to allow legit content to pass, but I also think that we'll also see mandatory firmware and software upgrades that we have to apply - after all, one requirement for any next gen player is a network connection - 360's is supplied via its console host, but all other STB players have one. I don't think it is there "just" to allow one greater access to features - it's likely there to sate compliance requirements first. #7, From what little I do know, it seems it would be an awful shame if HD DVD lost out to BD. |

| #6 I was talking about this in relation to the HD-DVD player from Microsoft, nothing to do with Windows or other forms of HDCP that are already about (Sky HD etc). Just HD-DVD based. |
