Microsoft's Mac Business Unit resisting .NET push | |

Last July in New York, Kevin Browne, General Manager of Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit, provided an early glimpse at how the company's overall .NET strategy would affect the Mac. At that time, Browne told eWEEK that he expects the company to continue selling an "unconnected" version of Mac Office, as opposed to fully adopting .NET's strategy of remote software services. He also said that the company's plan -- which could change, he noted -- was to offer two versions of Office for Mac: One non-.NET version, similar to the one sold in stores today, and another less-expensive version that takes advantage of .NET services to enhance its feature set. While the "two Offices" approach may indeed still be a plan, sources say that the situation at Microsoft's MacBU has grown murky and uncertain. "The MacBU is not all that thrilled with the Mac doing .NET," one insider observed. As the rest of Microsoft is pressuring the unit into a widespread adoption of .NET, the group is resisting. | ||

I would hope you would all just look at this from within Microsoft: have the MS .Net developers and engineers ported .Net to the Mac? No, so in the MacBU world, they are programming for a world completely without .Net. How are they supposed to implement it themselves without a large scale roadmap for .Net on the Mac. These guys are learning Cocoa and Obj-C, not C#. So MS is fighting with itself. And, of course, bribing Corel to port it to BSD, but we all know that'll take Corel about 40 years... So what does MS want? Do they want .Net to work on other platforms or not. The MacBU programmers are not equipped to build it out themselves.
And, by the way, isn't it interesting that maybe the best Mac programmers AND employees of Microsoft don't want to have anything to do with .Net? This will be very interesting as it boils to the surface and gets picked up or discussed in the press. I just can't get this idea out of my head that .NET is more good for Microsoft's "Sustained Revenue Requirements" than it is for customers.
Oh, and there's that little Privacy thing, and the simple fact of placing all your eggs in one basket too :) TL |

| what are you talking about, soda? I didn't see you make any comment on this topic. Larry is slightly off topic, but his concern for privacy is legit on the Mac platform, as this is also something lacking on the Mac version of Office and getting pushed by MS even though they don't have a Mac implementation of it (product activation). And neowin the other day had a conversation going on about how Longhorn may only be available as a subscription and that updates, etc. will require an internet connection. That sounds like sustaining a revenue stream to me and like putting your eggs in one basket. |

OpenDoc was real and was rejected by the consumers so... are there any lessons for Microsoft? You bet.
Of course, OD didn't go far and was going to depend on Copland, but a lot of Mac users got to see and use OpenDoc, and it went flat. Pieces of OpenDoc survive today in the OS and could be revived pretty easily (in other words, Apple learned alot about distributed app lessons 10 years ago). Do you remember Zilla? Did you know that NeXT and now Apple had the first web app server? Did you know that Applescript can hook into Java, perl, SmallTalk, other languages, uses XML and SOAP and has its own free GUI EDI? Microsoft doesn't have exclusive stock in the web services standards, but there .Net platform NEEDS to be other places beside MS products. But whatever...
