Microsoft Starts a Harder Push on the 64-Bit Vista | |

With Windows Vista release to computer makers this week, Microsoft starts a harder push on the 64-bit version of the company’s new operating system, said Barry Goffe, director in the Windows client product management team. He said that in order to use the Windows Vista logo, device manufacturers must provide their drivers in both (32-bit and 64-bit) versions. “We’re really making sure that 32-bit and 64-bit are equally good choice[s] for a customer,” Goffe said. | ||

| We can be sure that how successful they are will determine in no small way, what direction they will go in with SP's and feature packs for Vista - every Windows pundit out here is missing this issue - and many are simply beefing about how hard 64 bit is to actually use in the real world. |

| Microsoft is gonna herd everyone to 64 bit from the server down to the client. They've started with Exchange 12 being 64 bit only, the rest of the server applications will follow to 64 bit only (most if not all already have 64 bit versions). Office in a 64 bit flavor will be the sign that 64 bit on the client is on the horizon... |

| Problem is that it isn't just drivers that are the problem a lot of people won't go with 64-bit yet because of compatibility problems with older software, it holds a lot of people back. |
