Thanks Stefan. "But like other companies, Sun has been rattled by the technology slump. In its second quarter, ending in December, the company lost $431 million, compared to a $423 million profit the year before. Cutbacks in capital spending meant far slower sales of the company's high-end computers. Last October, the company cut 3,900 jobs, the first layoffs in its history. Sun has also been spooked by the .NET Web services initiative of its hated rival, Microsoft Corp. .NET aims to make Microsoft's software interact seamlessly over corporate networks and the Internet. If .NET becomes the standard in Web services, it undercuts Sun ONE, an alternative Web services strategy, based upon the company's popular Java computing system. Sun is fighting back, not only by aggressively marketing Sun ONE but also by filing an antitrust suit Friday charging that Microsoft has sought to destroy Java and seeking damages that could reach $1 billion." | ||

I guess if you bite the hand that feeds you enough time the hand stops feeding.
That has been Suns deal since the beginnng. VERY POOR customer support at a HIGH cost. As the bottem feeder keeps moving up Suns prices start looking less appealing. Great Article. Altough the one time cost of 30k for a linux box is a misnomer:) there are still support costs in man hours. I forsee alot more of Sun's high end customers making the same move over the next couple of years as Intel and AMD's 64 bit initiatives matures. El |

It's truly unfortunate that the press is so completely clueless about .NET.
In this article, he talks about .NET web services competing with Sun ONE, but completely misses the larger, and more relevant, point that .NET is competing directly with Java itself! MS has done a very poor job in defining .NET and has led many people to think it's JUST web services and it's JUST Passport for their MSN site. |

The Coach.
Well there are several leves of standardization. UDDI being a discovery protocol (Disco is another used) WSDL being what the data contains and or any services like functions SOAP being the transport layer. Then the base layer of the data itself XML with a Schema. I kinda see xml without functions being phased out quickly. Web services, at it lowest level is a Standard Protocol for a internet program to isolate the Internet from the internal network by using a standard protocol. I imagine also as external B2B and B2C are enhanced by Web Services that it will carry over to internal networks. IOW why translate from a propiertary DB format to XML and back if XML databases can be set up to be as fast. (not always the case, but SQL server, DB2, and Oracle are all going to a format of covering all forms of db structure and fast. Relational, OO, and xml. Two very important standards are either ratified or near ratification, XML Signatures and XML Encryption and decryption. El |

I would disagree that it competes with Java itself. It is much better than Java so it really isn't competeing against it;) The only advantage that Java has right now is that it has implementations in several different OSes. While .net is only in Windows 98 and above. But Go-mono and another will have it implented in Linux this year and more than likely 3 or four other OSes And the nice thing about it all is that the Items that MS added to Java in the first place (the ability to access the native GUI componets primarily can be implemented in all platforms. Now it can be shown that you can get rid of AWT and Swing and access the native gui componets in a cross platform enviorment. Sun has proved that they are incompetent in the handleing of Java from day one. Thier versions of the JVM are one of the slowests in the industry. They saying that they would submit the Java language to the ECMA 2 times and Iso another and pulling back has shown to the community that Sun isn't serious about Open standards with the Java community.
