When Microsoft's online magazine, Slate, admitted last week that it had been tricked by a contributor using a manufactured identity, the incident highlighted the unique difficulty in sorting truth from fiction in the age of the Internet. At its inception, the Internet was heralded as a breakthrough medium whose vast potential to spread knowledge would provide a cure-all for human blights ranging from war to famine to authoritarianism. | I thought the whole point of Slate was to give ultra-liberals a place where they can spout their BS without fear of being taken seriously? How is this news? |

I don't read Slate much. Occasionally it will be linked to from msnbc.com, and the opinion pieces I read there are hardly what I would call ultra-liberal... more centrist, as #5 says.
I read one of slate's responses to the piece and how they had been deceived. I thought it was good that they came out and admitted it the way they did. Very candid. But yes, the Internet has become a place for deception and fraud. It is the equal playing ground of sorts, everyone can have a voice. Unfortunately the question not asked by many people is "should I be listening to this voice?" To the naive and easily deceived, it's a bad thing. |

#2: Slate is ultra-liberal. So I guess they're so hurting for writers they will accept anyone these days. Perhaps it's a good thing they can't find any writers to meet their agenda!
#5: Centrist. By centrist you mean "bash our 80+% approval rating president at every opportunity, no holds barred. Bash republicans on Enron even though Dems have received almost as much money from them, not to mention how much they're in the Entertainment industry's pocket" Centrist? Washington Post is more centrist than Slate. At least the New York Times, a leftist yellow-journalism rag, tries to hide their bias. Ok, let's look at Slate.msn.com's front page.
The top three headlines are: "Priests, Pedophiles and the Celibacy Problem" - In this article, we see a full-on bash of Catholicism and organized religion and bashing of celibacy (similar to the liberal bashing of the abstinance concept). "Big Steel's Slimy CEO" - In this article those evil rich corporations are bashed. "Jimmy Carter and Bill Gates Sr. File From Africa" - Oh louded praised messiahs of Democratic and liberal thought! How much they fawn over these two makes me sick. It goes on and on, from advocating legalizing prostitution to help solve the HIV problem to bashing the Bush Administration for its nuclear policy... Makes me want to hurl... At least yellowtimes.org doesn't try to pretend. |

Yeah, the article on Heisenberg must be a left-wing communist plot to discredit the Nazis.
And the article that apparently is an attack on Thomas Friedman of the NYTimes... yep that's another communist deception device. But the article about the Matthew Shepard movies is the most damning, because it attacks gay-bashers who are a protected minority. Yep, clearly liberal tripe... Good grief you people need to get a grip. I've never followed slate much but from the sampling of articles just on the front page, it appears to be some pretty good writing. Attacking preconceived notions, safe assumptions and going right for the heart of an argument. Looks good to me. |
