While the Microsoft-sanctioned name of the next version of Internet Explorer (IE) is IE "Next," it seems it will likely be christened IE 8.0.
That's according to Chris Wilson, the new platform architect for IE. (IE-team veteran Wilson, until a few days ago, was the group platform manager of IE. In his new role, Wilson will be spending his time focusing on making IE a better Web-development platform.)
Wilson delivered a couple of addresses at the Ajax Experience 2006 conference in Boston this week. In addition to dropping the IE 8.0 name, Wilson shared a few other IE-related tidbits, too.

Do you think IE 8 will be as good as FF2?

oldog, I think that IE7 is as good as FF2, and suits my preferences much more, as well. To each his own.
Here's the most important part of this story, IMO: "While Wilson didn't share many meaty IE 8.0 details, he noted that security, privacy and compatibility will all be top priorities in the next IE release, which is expected some time in the next 12-18 months."

Call it X-IE, IE Live, Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer Live.
#2 So given that you think IE7 is equal to FF2 one would have to presume that standards support is meaningless to you. And Wilson didn't share any IE8 details because they need to wait to see what Opera, FF etc will do in the next 12 months (even though a majority of the roadmap for FF3 is known).

Three words:
Better. Standards. Support.

#3 - Not everyone cares about standards support. The average user primarily just wants to view their web sites; they don't care how it's done.
The reason that IE8 details weren't shared may just be because they don't want to be in the situation where they start announcing features and then have to cut them.

#3, I presume, then, that standards support means everything to you. There's more to a browser than any one thing.

#3 Maybe someday Firefox will pass the Acid2 test.

#8, We'll likely never see the tests sites add the correct doctype tags to invoke IE 7's much more strict rendering capabilities. I'd like to see them do this and see what the results would be.

#8 No current version of Firefox passes Acid2.
In a year or two some version may.
The reflow branch is not terribly functional:
http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/acid/
"Originally planned to have the 1.6 engine branch in version 2.0, this was abandoned as it would delay the release, meaning that Firefox 2 will have the same engine as 1.5. The Reflow branch has been developed further than the original 1.6 branch, and now passes the Acid 2 test, making it the fifth browser to do so. This branch is not yet in any public releases, and although it can be compiled from the CVS source, it is certainly nowhere near ready for public use yet (images fail to appear on many pages, several form inputs do not work, layout does not cope with resizing, and parts of the page or interface may appear and disappear). "
I'm pretty sure its easy to customize a browser to pretend to render Acid2 properly, but do nothing else at all well. I assume thats what reflow is all about.

#9 And whose fault is that? Think about it.
#10 You assume that's what reflow branch is about because you're clueless and you couldn't code your way out of an if statement. Since you were allowed to name features in a pre-release version of IE (remember all those comments you made weeks and months before IE7 was released), then I'm allowed to do the same for a beta of FireFox v3.

#11 What a bitter boy you are.
Here I quote from a well known webpage and you throw a hissy fit because the website points out the branch that does Acid2 is unusable.
You are very childish.
