Has your Xbox 360 Died on you?
Time: 17:18 EST/22:18 GMT | News Source: ActiveXbox.com | Posted By: Byron Hinson

Well it seems that I too have joined the ranks of a dissapointed Xbox 360 owner as my Xbox 360 from back in November has joined the other hoards of dead 360s that seem to have been doing the rounds.

My 360 had been fantastic up until now, working with Media Center, music and every game I could throw at it. Well a few days ago after starting my Splinter Cell review, the machine started to lock up, it went from once or twice to every time I put a game in. Then in menus and on start up, finally I got the 3 red lights that meant that there was a hardware problem.

So I'm sorry to say that some of the reviews we announced recently are on hold for a bit until Microsoft can sort me out with a repair. But todays question is - has your Xbox 360 died on you? Fill in the poll as we may be writing a in-depth story about how many have developed faults and how well looked after users have been when they have contacted support and sent them back.

I imagine someone out there is working on the website 'www.myxboxisalemon.com' right about now...

I just picked one up a few weeks ago. I hope it doesn't die. I've had one lock up, but I attributed it to networking "funkiness". That's as close as I can get to an explanation.

had mine since the day they launched. no problems. [cross fingers].

Yow... talk about out of touch with a topic... I had no idea such a large percentage of owners were seeing lockups and system failures...

We've had ours since the first of the year and have not yet seen any issues.

This does concern me, however. I'd have thought there would be a lot of press about this with a device MTF so short. I read about devices that shipped early on running hot, but have not seen that and some of our boys use the Xbox quite a lot. I'd be curious to read of what kinds of problems people have had and how they were resolved.

My 360 died 3 days after purchase. It just wouldnt switch on one morning. The console was completely dead - no ring of light, just a red light on the power supply instead of the amber standby light....

Took my 360 to the local game store and used their power supply. Their power supply got the red light and my xbox lay dormant. Then for the sake of completeness I hooked my power supply to their 360, light goes green, stores xbox fires up no problem, suggesting my power supply is ok and wasnt responsible for the death of my 360. So it appeared the xbox itself was the problem. It had died completely.

I sent it back to Microsoft (I was no longer in the country I bought the xbox so couldnt do a store return - and I took VERY good care of it whilst travelling) and 3 weeks later I received a new xbox. I noticed the the manufacturing date was OLDER than the one I had bought, which for some reason was kinda annoying to me. Now with the replacement, the CDROM drawer doesnt open all the time. Grrr. It just gets jammed when sitting horizontal, sometimes. Some games exit while playing saying my disc is dirty or damaged (double Grrr), when in fact the disc is in pristine condition, like all my disks. The cdrom NEVER ejects when the xbox is used in the vertical position, I gave up on that ages ago. I cant be bothered sending it back again. Someone should come to my place , pick it up, drop me a new one at the same time, and apologise, if you ask me. I shelled a lot of hard earned cash on that thing, and these little things make all the difference to the end-user happiness factor. Mine is less than a 10, when it could have been a 10 quite easily. Having said that I love my xbox game wise, and all the other nifty features which are incorporated are way cool. My story should in no way turn off a potential owner. xbox's rock. I still however wish I could get this replacement replaced with no inconvenience to me. If that was possible I would be 100% happy. Guess I could wish upon a star, too.

Well early adopters were hit hard, its why MS backtracked on charging people for repairs recently, simply because there were so many faulty ones being returned, much higher than the usual early hardware release average that MS liked to tell sites it was.

I bought my 360 in March and had no problems until I bought Madden07. Game started freezing then started getting rainbow colors going through the screen and then the three red lights. I called Microsoft and they sent me a new(what they say) 360 two weeks ago. During this time I've been through some forums to read up on this problem and people have been saying it's heat and it's madden but we all know that a game system will work fine in a well ventilated area which mine is. Even so I went out and purchased a fan for mine when the new one came back. We all know also that software can not cause hardware failure. Not that i'm aware of. To test that theory I went out and exchanged madden four different times and the game froze on each occasion before finally getting the three red lights. So I finally get my second 360, play madden for a couple days and guess what, the game freezes again. I stop for the day and the next night I go to play a movie and the movie freezes and I get an E 79 erro and to call Microsoft, I reboot the system and the three red lights appear. I again call Microsoft and they are sending out another system. I will try NUMBER THREE and see what happens.

Yikes!

I'd like to have one of these, but that's a pretty high percentage.

Don't these only have 90 day warranties?

Yes, only 2005 dated models will be repaired for free despite the 90 day warranty

#11 By 3 (62.253.128.15) at 10/24/2006 10:59:54 AM
#8 - mine started when I put the new Splinter Cell game in, although I highly doubt it caused the problem, it certainly helped show it up and kill the 360! Green squares, lock ups, etc

#12 By 3746 (71.19.41.232) at 10/24/2006 12:08:24 PM
Anyone who buys a early version of the hardware with only a 90 day warranty is nuts. That is a lot of cash to drop to be an early adopter and beta tester. These devices should have at least 1 year on them.

What kind of warranty will the PS3 have?

#13 By 2960 (68.101.39.180) at 10/24/2006 12:51:38 PM
Sony has been known to give only 90 day warranties on expensive TV's. I would not be suprised if it's only 90 days.

RUMOR only - has it... that games that leverage the 360's multiple cores result in greater heat and higher rates of failure. Just as often as that is suggested, gamers and supporters - including Microsoft, say it's bunk and there is no science to support suggestions that games that make use of the system's aggregate potential have no impact on its MTF.

Allegedly, one dev at EA - opposite a very early pool of 300 systems used by dev testers, stated he/she observed a high rate of failure - but these were reference designs and dev code - perhaps code that pushed hardware, or ran CPU's continuously and without releasing resources. Most folks know that they can write code that will hammer a system - we know for a fact that we've made huge errors early on that result in a runaway that can do this to a server. Apparently, early builds of Dead Rising, or game demo/downloads of it were thought to be tied to it.

EA, via Microsoft strongly rejected the claim and offered on EA's behalf, a statement refuting any such report - informal or otherwise.

A percentage of people are suggesting that this is a Sony PS3 pre-release FUD Bomb - similar to those dropped on Nintendo and Sega years ago. I have no clue if that is true, or not.

That's all I have been able to find out about it so far. Needless to say, I'll be adding one of those after-market tri-fan coolers to our boys' 360 - just to be safe... wondering if the dev alleged to have asserted this from EA owns a percentage of the after-market cooling business ;)

what percent of these results is simply the troll factor? you know chrishedlund voted for "3 rings" yet has no xbox.
